Post V-Gate OBD-II Wifi Adapter
on: December 14, 2013 (GMT)

Is anyone using the V-Gate Wifi Adapter with Torque Pro and a non routed Android device?

It seems I have led myself down a path of a technical interface nightmare.

How I got here?

1. I was in the market to buy an OBD-II scanner for my Jeep Wrangler.
2. I read a lot of great things and recommendations for Torque Pro on the Jeep Wrangler forum I regularly visit.
3. I go to the iTunes Store and learned Torque Pro is only available for Android devices, and I only own Apple iDevices.
4. I find a great sale on a 7″ Tablet running Android 4.2.2 …thought to myself. “Great!!! I’ll buy this tablet, just to run Torque Pro”.

5. I come to this forum to see which devices are known to work well with Torque Pro and learn they’re all BT OBD-II devices.

6. Go back to my tablet and notice, this tablet only has Wifi and no BT. Thus, a good reason it was inexpensive.

7. I start reading posts on this forum, and find out to get Wifi to work, I will most likely need to root my Android Tablet, change a config file and reconfigure the Ad-Hoc settings. YIKES BATMAN!!!!

8. After reading a tutorial on how to do all this hacking, I say “Thanks….but no thanks…not for me.”

9. I Google the net to find if anyone is running Torque Pro with a OBD-II Wifi adapter and to see if they shared how they got it to work. I find a couple YouTube videos where someone shows themselves using Torque Pro with a Wifi Adapter. No other info posted:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0QQjrocIwg

10. I further find additional videos showing the V-Gate OBD-II Wifi adapter which says it works with Android devices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O2-a-iLkWA

11. I read more information about the V-Gate Wifi adapter and it states it works with iPhone, PC and Android devices with no need to root my Android device due to using a newer BT Arm chipset.

12. I buy the V-Gate Wifi adapter. I connect my Android Tablet via Wifi to the device, no problem.

13. I go to test to see if it will work with the Torque Lite free app, before I go ahead and make my Torque Pro purchase. The Free version doesn’t let you connect via Wifi!!!!

14. I come back on this forum to see if there’s some way I can check to see if this does in fact work with Torque Pro and read a post which recommends trying it out with “ConnectBot” 1st.

15. I install the ConnectBot App and run it. It’s some kind of connection console, but I have no idea of how to make it connect and communicate with my OBDII wifi adapter. Can some one throw me a bone and give me some tips on how to do that???

Has anyone on this forum used the V-Gate Wifi Adapter with Torque Pro?

I want to go and buy and install the Torque Pro app, but at this point I would like to stop making any further purchases which has done nothing but lead myself down a path of frustrations. It’s starting to look like I should just throw in the towel and purchase a different app for my iPhone and use this Wifi Adapter and call it a day.

Thanks for any help……very frustrated and learning through experience.

Just in case anyone is wondering…..

Android Tablet (Wifi only) + V-Gate OBD2 Wifi + Torque Pro = Does Not work.

Seems like you are required to ROOT the Tablet. Would have been nice if Torque Lite would have supported Wifi just so I didn’t have to purchase the Pro version to learn it doesn’t work with my current setup.

Do you know the port it uses?

Hi

There are 2 types of WiFi adapter – one specifically for iPhones, and one that should work with any device

Make sure you have the WiFi device that supports ‘infrastructure’ mode, and not ‘Ad-Hoc’

If your wifi adapter is an ‘Ad-Hoc’ one, you will likely require to root your tablet/device before it will work (the ad-hoc adapters are designed for iPhones only)

The ‘Infrastructure’ adapters should work out of the box (they will be visible in the android or blackberry settings, and you will be able to select and associate with it – you will then be able to connect to it using Torque)

There’s more information on: http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters_Blackberry make sure any vendor lists the adapter specifically as supporting infrastructure mode.

Thank you for the reply. The V-Gate Wifi adapter is the one that I purchased. It’s the same one you have linked in the post above.

The Adapter does show up in the Wifi Settings, and my Android Tablet does seem to connecting to it. However, when I launch Torque Pro it does not seem to be receiving anything. I did go into the Torque pro settings and make sure Wifi was selected instead of Bluetooth.

The Azpen Tablet that I’m using is Wifi only and is running Jelly Bean v4.2.2

I’m not sure what else to do to trouble shoot this further.

If it’s an ‘infastructure mode’ wifi adapter, then it should be working for you, unless the tablet is doing something like checking for a working internet connection before allowing data to be sent to the wifi device

In the wifi settings, there should be an ‘advanced’ menu somewhere, and this will contain (if it has the option at all) an option to ‘check internet connection’ (or something named similarly) – disable this as it will prevent the tablet from talking to the wifi device

If you’ve told Torque to use WiFi in the app settings, and the IP address and Port are the same as setup in the adapter (this should have been documented with the adapter somewhere) then you should now be up and running

The wifi adapters can sometimes take a moment to startup, (as they need to boot up) but they should be 100% by the time you see them on the wifi list in android to connect to

The only other thing it could be is that the OBD2 side of the adapter has died (this unfortunately can happen on the clone adapters) and means that you would be able to connect to the adapter, but the actual part that does the talking to the vehicle ECU isn’t working. I’ve yet to see a vgate wifi adapter do this and never work again (though I have see one that was intermittently working)

Here’s the OBD2 Wifi device info:
OBDII decode chip: ARM 16bit MCU
SSID: V-LINK (not password)
IP: 192.168.0.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Port: 35000

Here’s an update.

I got it to work!!!

What happened was the 1st time it didn’t work, I went into the Android’s Wifi settings when it was connected to the OBD2 device and noted it showed the IP Address as 192.168.1.11.

So then I configured in Torque Wifi setting the IP to be the same (ie 192.168.1.11). I guess I figured if it didn’t work the 1st time with different IP addresses, then I had to make the IP addresses match. In other words Android Device Wifi Address IP=192.168.1.11, then I needed to tell Torque this was the IP address.

So now to get it to work, I went and set the IP Address setting for the OBD2 device in Torque to 192.168.1.10, and Port 35000 as I posted above. I then went to the Android Wifi connection and re-established the Wifi connection where it again showed IP Adress 192.168.1.11 when connected to the device via wifi. I then re-launched Torque and it connected right up and started working.

FYI,
I posted a write-up on the Jeep Wrangler forum on how to configure the Vgate Wifi Adapter device with Torque Pro if anyone is interested.

Write up can be found Here:

I recently purchased the Vgate OBD-II Wifi Adapter as well. I was able to connect to my Samsung Note 4 after working the settings to Wifi and powering off and back on the phone. This worked with both the Torque Pro and Lite versions of the app.

My question is has anyone noticed a lack of connectivity to the internet (through 4g) while connected to the OBD2 reader? Are there any tricks to maintaining connectivity but getting 4g internet too?
