Post GM "current gear" - Commanded or actual?

Does anyone know if the GM “Current Gear” is the commanded gear, or the actual gear?

Also, TCC slip RPM is reported correctly in high range, but in low range (t-case) the number goes well into the negative thousands. I have no idea if this is the ECM sending the wrong data because GM just didn’t care, or if something in the way torque reads this data is broke. VSS/Speedo read correctly so I know the ECM knows it’s in 4L.
