Post Ob2 device adaptor

Tried to run a diagnostics check on my 2012 jeep compass utilizing the OB2 adaptor, but my smart phone is not recognizing the device. I linked everything up with my bluetooth, but phone still shows adapter not connected or recognized. What should I do?
