Post VW mode 06 access - [no response] / [no data]

I am trying to read soot load on a 2012 VW 2.0L TDI, mode 06 PID B2C5.
Torque can access the parameter OK under ‘test results’, but when I enter a custom PID, it responds [no response] for 06B2, while printing a long list of bytes, including the ones I’m looking for, and responds [no data] for 06B2C5.

Here is the screenshot from the extended PID test:

I would like to extract the ‘068B’ a few bytes after the B2C5 label.

Does anybody know how to access those bytes with torque?

Have you tried using the R0… mode of
variable addressing? Maybe it will work
using the raw response. ((R74*256)+R75)?

Not sure how the frame control bytes affect
the count.

Torque is typically looking for mode 01, 21,
and 22 for custom pids. Mode 06 used by
test results. The app is probably not setup
to recognize the mode 06 in a custom pid
even though the test function may execute
with a response.

Would like to know if this works for you.

(Just another user with an OBDI vehicle).

Thanks for the quick reply, capp777! I didn’t even know this raw addressing mode (and the numeric N-mode) existed.

I’ll try it tomorrow.

Using R or N byte addresses does not help. I tried R75 and R76, also R1, and some N locations. I think Torque does not recognize the mode 6 answer as a valid data response, even though it is able to dump the raw data on screen.

I enabled debug mode, went to the screen with the soot display, ran it for a while, and then sent a debug report, with my username and ‘VW mode 6’ and an email address in the subject line. I hope Ian will find time to look at it.
It would be really nice to be able to display what the car thinks the DPF soot load is, so one knows when a regeneration is imminent.

Noted – I’ll setup a test harness here and see what’s up – mode 06 is treated differently (as the app handles some parts of it internally for the mode-06 screens) so its likely not being passed to the equation handler

I think it would be OK if mode 6 data were passed to the equation handler without some of the usual tests and checks. They are different anyways: for example, the soot load seems to remain stale for the first 50 miles after a regeneration, so it requires special interpretation in any case.

Ian, any new developments on getting the Mode 6 data to the equation engine?

Hi

Yep, I’m set to look at it after the 1.8.98 update is sent out (this hit beta test tonight). Hopefully it should be sorted out by next week (friday, ish)

Hi Ian, in your last post you mentioned beta testing. How does one get the beta version? Did the mode 6 mod already make it into beta?

Installed it on the phone, and will run it tomorrow morning! Very exciting!

It’s working! Thanks a lot for enabling access to these data, Ian.

I’m using bytes R49 and R50. R1 is the ‘B2’ byte in the first line of the response above. There are 5 data bytes in the first line, and 7 data bytes per line in the second and following lines.

Ian, FYI: displaying the mode 6 data in a floating widget does not work. The widget displays 0, while the original display keeps working. Also, long pressing this widget to bring up the option to delete does not work.
I don’t know whether this is expected behaviour for the beta implementation or not.

Update: Ian, the floating widget works inconsistently in version 1.8.106: I had a floating copy working, then added a smaller display of soot level (mode 6) on another screen, and when I made a floating widget copy of that, it came up with 0.0. Trying to recreate the original floating widget, it no longer works. I will try the next beta.

ok thanks – I’ll look into this and what’s up with it. Might take an update or two before I get to it
