Post Re: Subaru SSM protocol

Hi, I originally purchased Torque a while ago in order to check some fault codes, but I never had any joy with the real-time measurements since my car is a Japanese-market 2006 Subaru Forester STi imported into the UK. SSM of course.

Having stumbled across this thread I tried setting the vehicle profile to use SSM, the connection is with the OBDkey 1.3 set to SSM mode.

And to my great surprise the real-time data via SSM now works absolutely fine – the default indications of throttle position, coolant temp, revs and vacuum are fast and appear accurate. I haven’t tried anything else, but this is A Great Leap Forward!

I registered on here just to say thanks…

Edited to add: since I seem to be in possession of a working instance of a JDM Subaru with SSM and a functioning Torque I’m happy to try other stuff in debug mode if it will assist in further development. Android is ICS on a Samsung Galaxy Note by the way.

So from my understanding I need an OBDkey for my 97 Outback but I don’t know how can I check the SSM options? And it’s still not known if it will really work it seems.

Hi

No – for OBD2 compliant vehicles (and Subaru which supports OBD2) then you can use any OBD2 compatible bluetooth adapter that supports the ELM327 command set (there is a list on http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters )

For vehicles that don’t support OBD2 (this is usually pre-1996 petrol vehicles sold in the EU / US) then you will need to see if it’s SSM-II compatible – if it is, then you can use the OBDKey with the app (and select the SSM protocol in the vehicle profile)

Newer vehicles should also be SSM-II compatible. The app will work on these as well using the SSM protocol (you can have vehicles that are both OBD2 and SSM-II compatible).

The newest Subarus which use CANBUS, are not yet supported though – typically these are vehicles from 2006/7 onwards (all manufacturers started switching to CANBUS around this time). But these vehicles will be OBD2 compliant if sold in the EU / US due to legislation.

A quick question about which sensors are available via SSM.

When I go to add a sensor some are shown as green but a large number are unavailable. Is that because the code to interpret data from those sensors isn’t there, or because there is no appropriate sensor data in SSM?

Or in other words, is it likely that further development of Torque will be able to decode more sensors in the SSM data :)

Thanks for responding, I know it supports SSM because in the service manual they have a decent sized section for showing things you can check with the SSM tool. It just confused me when they were talking about the years.

My device I have now is one of those Ebay ELM327 devices, I was thinking of getting the Kiwi bluetooth one but something like the OBDLink MX I don’t think will help at all for my read speed because I don’t have CANbus?

Is there any way of telling, if it will work on my car?
I dont want to buy another adapter, unless I know it will work.

Post OBDKey SSM Support
on: November 6, 2012 (GMT)

I have been sent a few emails about OBDKey support of the SSM protocol.

OBDKey since version 1.30 does support the SSM protocol, but does require a command to switch the OBDKey into the “pass through” mode needed for SSM.

For OBDKey Version 1.30 the command is “ATSPC”, but for OBDKey versions 1.40 the command is “ATSPS”.

This is because the ELM327 from 1.40 used ATSPC for a “User CAN” protocol.

The ATSPC / ATSPS commands are persisited so that if the OBDKey unit is removed from the vehicle, then it will still be in SSM mode when next connected to the vehicle. ATSP0 will revert the OBDKey unit back to OBDII auto mode.

Interesting that the command is ATSPS not ATSPC… that would’ve been nice to know a couple of months ago.

I’ve finally got OBDKey to give me ‘something’ (with ATSPS instead of ATPSPC), but I could only get it to work on my laptop with ecuExplorer (everything seems to work fine there – it didn’t before).
Everytime I connect with Torque, it seems to revert back to the pre-passthrough mode and it throws errors.
This seems to be confirmed as when I connect it back to ecuExplorer it doesn’t work. I can get it working again with ATZ -> ATSPS commands.
Is Torque trying to do ATZ -> ATSPC commands in the background or something?

Hi

It matters if it is SSM via CANBUS or SSM via non-CANBUS protocols (ie: ISO9141/KWP)

Support for SSM via non-CANBUS is done and has been verified by a few people now using OBDKey and pre-CANBUS vehicles. CANBUS support however is not yet as it doesn’t require the adapter to be put into any special mode but does require some further changes in the app. CANBUS is used on newer vehicles

What a fun few weeks, just bought an MY01 Subaru Outback and having no luck with Torque.

Cheap eBay OBDII adaptor no go, Subaru didn’t support OBDII in Australia in this model, I found out after some research.

Ok, got an OBDKey. Software works on PC, switches over to SSM ok and tells me it is talking to the ECU. Torque just sits there with the car icon flashing and no connection to the ECU.

Thought to myself, may as well get a VAGcom USB cable, they’re pretty cheap. FreeSSM communicates with the ECU, but not Torque. Torque is able to identify the USB/Serial adaptor but gets no further. I have not tried this cable on an OBDII car as of yet.

Side note: it might be worth having a setting in the car configuration to use USB/WiFi/Bluetooth, rather than in general settings; I also use this app in a car that has the above OBDII Bluetooth adaptor in it.

I have tried my Galaxy Note and Nexus 7, both no go. I also have access to a Nexus S and an ASUS Transformer Prime that I can try as well.

I also can’t find a way to debug what might be happening, /sdcard/torqueLogs is empty.

Hi

you don’t need to put the adapter into SSM Mode – Torque can do this automatically now

*important* make sure you have manually changed the protocol in the vehicle profile to ‘SSM’ and not leave it at ‘Automatic’ as this is very important (then quit and restart Torque to start a fresh connection to the adapter)

Nope, no go. I reset the OBDKey and it works OK in an OBD vehicle, but no-go in the Suby. Under “Adapter Status”, in the “Adapter Error Count”, I get an “other error” a few times on each attempted connect cycle.

I even pulled the adaptor a few times to make sure any connection was cleared out.

Looks like I’m in the same boat as everyone else. I have an ’06 Outback XT and I want to use SSM vs. OBD-II. I purchased the ScanTool MX which connected but the refresh rate wasn’t as quick as I wanted for my boost gauge. I am using the VAG-COM cable via USB OTG with my Galaxy SII Skyrocket with JellyBean (CM 10). The device recognizes the VAG-COM adapter via USB but I cannot connect to the ECU. I have tried different baud settings and protocol settings but still no dice. I can upload any logs you need, I would love to get this working for my subbie.

Oh and BTW, your application freaking rocks!

Same boat as everyone. Have a JDM Subaru Legacy 2.0 GT 2003 GT(2005 in US, I think) and ELM327 Firmware v.1.5. The Torque app recognizes the dongle, but can’t really connect to the ECU when in SSM mode.
It works excellent though with my wife’s VW Golf 2003.

I am interested in getting my car setup with reading the SSM protocols to get the added data available. I have a USDM 2008 Forester XT. It is CANBUS. Do I need the OBDKey adapter even though it is CANBUS? Is Torque setup to read SSM on the CANBUS cars yet? If not, is there anything I can do to help?

BTW, I have access to pretty much any USDM Subaru model/generation (new or old) needed to help support general development (even a BRZ).

Since there was some discussion on this over on subaruforester.org I just went out to see exactly what sensors I can use. My own car is a Subaru Forester Sti, so is originally a Japanese domestic market car that was imported into the UK. SSM only.

This was on a Samsung Galaxy Note running ICS, via the OBDKey Bluetooth dongle.

I simply went through the motions of adding a new control, then scrolled through the list of sensors and took screenshots. At 1280 pixels high they are a bit big for most screens so I’ve reduced them to 640.

I find it slightly unsettling that my phone has a higher vertical resolution than my desktop monitor….

Some of the actual values won’t make sense because the car wasn’t running, or some may be from when I started the engine but remained stationary. The idea is to show what is available.

Note that the exhaust gas temp is always 40, that’s an error.

Hi there, i just wanted to add to the subaru discussion.. I love the app and very impressed by its many features! Unfortunately i own a Japanese import 2005 Outback which is SSM only. For various reasons i cannot use the Obdkey adapter (namely because my android device doesnt have bluetooth..) however i have a SSM protocol USB cable.

Is it possible to connect to my android device through USB using SSM? there is no problem reading fault codes etc with my ELM327 cable over USB, but im guessing that SSM is only supported over bluetooth?

It recognizes that my cable is plugged in however there is no ELM chip (or any micro controller i guess) to talk to the Torque Pro app.

So my questions would be;

Can i get SSM data over USB?
Does it already do this and my setup is Wrong?
Is there likely to be any support for this in the future?

Thanks for your time,

Martin

glad to see all the support you have placed for SSM protocol. i currently am using a Tactrix to flash and monitor from laptop on my JDM STi v8 2005.

surprisingly i am able to connect my android tablet to a BT elm327 adapter which seems to communicate to the ecu (green check mark for connection to adapter, connection to ecu) but as you would expect no communication since the adapter is not using ssm.

is there a way or plans to impliment using the tactrix adapter?

Please get this working using the tactrix adapter.

I am using the Parrot Smart and i purchased your PRO app. Issues i am having.
I do not want to use the Bluetooth adapter on my car only because the bluetooth connection to my phone gets laggy and so does the readings. I rather only have my phone connected through bluetooth.

Do you think the PLX kiwi wifi adapter would work with your app on the Parrot Smart?

I tried to set the app to use the USB and no dice on the Parrot Smart i have. It doesn’t detect the connection. I guess its because it doesn’t have the usb drives needed to make the connections.

If you can help out or have some advice let me know please.

Thanks for a great app and hopefully i get an answer from you about this question.

Hi All,

I own a 2005 Subaru Liberty GT (AUS-DM) and are having the same problem as all others on here.

Running a OBDKey140 via BT in SSM mode. Received an email from Sinclair at OBDKey today with some new firmware that should work with SSM and Torque, however I am still getting the looping adaptor error count.

I sent some error logs to Ian a few weeks back – Can anything be done about this?

Video below shows the error…

Thanks in advance!
