Hi! Yes, I’m still puzzling over this one

Do you know what version of firmware the OBDkey you have is using? (it should say it when you type ATZ on the command prompt for it) – I’m using 1.30 here on an SSM-II capable ECU (which appears to work, despite OBDKey’s page on http://www.obdkey.com/firmwareupdate.asp appears to mention SSM is part of the 1.40 update)

Yep, it’s 1.40. I bought it direct from OBDKey in December last year.

That’s good – I have a 1.30 unit here (something may have changed in the 1.4 so may have to get hold of one of those and see what’s up)

I’m also interested in this working, have a 2007 Forester XT. I don’t have the OBDkey yet, watching how development goes before I get one. Just using the ELM version for now.

I have a JDM 2009 turbo forester and it only shows connected but no data, but on my wife’s 2005 turbo forester it works fabulously. Help I am using version 1.5.72

I just tried obdkey 1.4 on my 2011 sti without success, seems to work fine in elm mode though. Sent you a debug log.

Hi!

The debug log has helped, thanks!

There will be a change in 1.6.4 (to do with the init of the adapter) and some extra documentation for the OBDKey that I didn’t have before – this should hopefully sort everything out and get people up and running

Any further progress with ELM327 and JDM ECUs?

On another tack – A guy on the club.liberty forum ordered an OBDKey and couldn’t get it to connect at all…

Thanks

Hi!

For using OBD2 on JDM vehicles (vehicles originally sold in Japans domestic market) you’re at the mercy of whether or not the manufacturer decided to implement OBD2 (if they did implement OBD2, then Torque should definitely work with the vehicle as it’s basically a standard that they must conform to)

This is because Japans market is not covered by the same legislation that the EU and the US with regards to OBD2 – they simply don’t have to implement it in japan for vehicles sold in that country.

However, for SSM, it may now be working for all vehicles (not just one or two) that support the SSM protocol – I have to get versoin 1.6.4 out the door and then wait for feedback (not having a subaru myself to test with,.. only the ECU from one, testing has been a bit limited with the OBDKey). You will need an OBDKey to get SSM support (a normal OBD2 adapter will not support it)

It’s also possible that a form of OBD2 /may/ be implemented on the vehicle (but requiring a specific init string / headers to be set before it will respond). The ‘custom init’ string in the vehicle profile will let you input the custom settings into the app if you manage to find them on the net. I’ve had a quick search myself, but haven’t seen anything (via google) that might help

Hi

1.6.4 is out and has a couple of changes that hopefully(!) will get you up and running

This is all sounding fantastic. Can someone tell me the cheapest SSM enabled device to buy. I know the OBDKey works but is there anything cheaper?

Not working here either, also sent a log. I should also mention when it tries to switch to ssm mode it throws a cel with a canbus network error code. When I switch back to elm mode I can clear it and everything works fine.

Hm

Not sure this will be the same for vehicles which use CANBUS for OBD – it should work on vehicles that use the KWP protocol for OBD though…

I *think* that for CANBUS vehicles, the communication is different (don’t quote me on that however), just like for VWs that have CANBUS (and no longer use kwp1281)

I’ll need to do some further checking – if anyone also knows any info on canbus vehicles, this may also be helpful!

You’re getting the error logged because the OBDKey gets dropped straight onto the diagnostic bus configured in SSM mode (which isn’t CANBUS) and this can cause a CEL to be thrown (though this should be easily clearable without issue)

EDIT: Found some documentation on this. Yes, it won’t work on vehicles that use CANBUS, but will be working on pre-canbus vehicles (this clears up some confusion). Fortunately the canbus implementation isn’t that far from the KWP implementation (the same kinds of requests, just stuffed into a CAN message instead) so this should be supportable. However I now need to learn how to send specific canbus requests (and hopefully the ELM adapters and OBDKey can do this)

Hi, bear with me I’m a newbie here and hope this is the right section. I recently bought Pro v1.6.15 and am using it with a 2005 JDM Spec Forester STi using an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter and HTC One S.

I’ve succesfully paired the adapter with the phone and app but still not able to get any live readings, ist this something that can be fixed? if not would a differnt adapter do it and which sort?

Cheers
Mike

I’m in a very similar situation. Bought pro app and ELM327 bluetooth and can pair fine and see some data but no live readings at all. I have a 2007 Forester STI (Grey import).

If log files would be helpful, please let me know and I can send them. I am happy to buy the OBDkey if I know this will work, but it’s not clear at the moment.

Hi!

Japan / Grey imports are likely disabled for most OBD2 data due to lack of legislation for it outside of the EU / US. This is why you get a connection, but often no sensors are available

For CANBUS subarus, the OBDKey isn’t required as the SSM requests are sent differently (I have now some documentation on newer CANBUS vehicles and just need to sit down and do some work implementing it)

For pre-CANBUS subarus, the OBDKey will be needed to connect to the ECU not using OBD2 (using SSM instead). This should be done and working (you will need to manually select the SSM protocol in the vehicle profile settings)

For a 2007 vehicle I’m /guessing/ will be CANBUS as it’s quite ‘recent’. However I’m not an expert on subarus and your best bet will be to ask on a subaru forum for this info

Looking forward to what you can figure out!

Is there still progress happening with this?

I have a 99 subaru legacy b4 and an OBDKey 1.40 and have not had any luck.

I brought your app even though the lite version didnt work for me just because I think you are doing great work and the app is top notch except for the fact that it doesnt work for me.

I can connect to the obdkey but cannot connect to the ecu.
