Hm, okay, can you send me your email address to ian@prowl.org – I’d like to send you a specific APK(torque application) which has some more changes in it based on the debugs so far

Very impressed with the level of support I see. I’m really hoping I won’t have similar issues with my ’03 WRX. I’m in Greensboro NC. I’m not sure where you are located, but if you are nearby, I would gladly volunteer my car for testing.

It’d be good to hear from your experience, this could potentially be something I’ve done. If you don’t have problems that could confirm it (although maybe not since we do have 2 different cars in 2 different countries).

Totally agree with you on the support front, Ian’s awesome!

Hi

I’ts going to be a bit patchy for the next couple of days as I’m moving house :-)

Subaru’s do also support OBD2 in later models (an EU and US requirement) and this should be the case for most vehicles built from 1996 (excluding some japanese imports), all you need to do if it is compliant is select ‘automatic’ from the vehicle profile and the app will do the rest

The proper SSM-II(subaru’s native) protocol will bring make some extra sensors available, which will hopefully work after we find out the small issue that’s stopping it from talking (currently it looks like the adapter isn’t in passthrough mode when trying to talk SSM)

If you have a tablet running honeycomb or above, then the app *might* support tactrix cables as well if they use FTDI chips. (make sure you select SSM from the vehicle profile first though). I have little information on tactrix, so this is purely from guesswork at the moment.

Just wondering if you’ve had any more work done Re: SSM ?
Been a while since I’ve heard from anyone.

Hi

Unfortunately didn’t get very far – without knowing for certain that the OBDKey is in passthrough mode, it’s difficult to know if it can support it.

I’ve recently got a golf ECU working on my testbench, if I can find a cheap enough one, I may see if I can aquire a subaru ECU that talks SSM

tried to find on how to message you but can’t find it. anyway, i don’t know if u know or not, subaru obd2 runs on SAE J1978. but i noticed you don’t have that only SAE J1850. it works with other scan tools via the obd ii socket as long as they use SAE J1978.

i bought the app and it only gave 15 mins which is not enough time to get to my car to try it and revoke the payment. anyways, since i bought it. i was wondering if you need any technical information if i can help. let me know

oh and also, the obd adapter in subaru talks through its can bus system which might also be another pain for you.

To be honest, I don’t mind implementing the protocol – thats not much of an issue (though I don’t like poking around in ‘memory addresses’ in an ECU).

The main problem is testing – I don’t have a Subaru to develop on so the ‘getting it to work’ is going to be somewhat difficult initally 😉

I might release a test app, seperate to Torque to begin with, purely for SSM so I can release it to a few people that are ok with testing, as long as it’s understood by the tester that it is at own risk – ‘It broke my Subaru’ (which is unlikely but can’t be ruled out happening)

At the moment, for at least a month, I can’t work on this as I have a fair amount of other things to do in Torque, and the New website(s) supporting it. Once they are out of the way and I have the next update out of the way with, then I will be able to think about extra protocols (it would be cool to support SSM)

Ian

CANBUS isn’t an issue if the vehicle uses it – it actually makes things significantly easier :) – also they’re generally OBD2 compliant as well if they’re canbus, so the app will straight-off work in most cases (excluding japanese imports which have different legeslation)

I’ve got a 2000 impreza ECU on it’s way to me now, so once that arrives I will hopefully be able to workout the pins and hook it up to something and see if I can get it talking. Once that happens, finishing the SSM support will happen very quickly.

EDIT: and this appeared on my desk literally 5 minutes after replying to this thread :-) http://twitpic.com/8stgdb

EDIT2: It’s now talking to Torque. You’ll get this functionality in the next update and I’ll hopefully add more sensors with this as I develop vagcom and the SSM protocol some more. Currently only tested with the OBDKey 1.30 OBD adapter

Wow that’s great news. I bought Torque mostly just so I could use my phone as a cheaper alternative to a real boost gauge, but if the additional data from SSM can be polled that’d be awesome.

Just a quick question though: will a clone adapter be able to poll SSM sensors once this is implemented?

i can send to you the pin outs for the ecu if u need. i am using the jdm 2 litre subaru and if you ask me, the pinouts for 2.5 and 2.0 are similar in the same time of manufacture. though of course the ecu pin outs vary from the year of models as well.

Got it working – managed to find the relevant 9141 pins :)

Still looking at compatible adapters – generally the clones shouldn’t be able to function on this (however there are some exceptions where the most recent, genuine ELM327 chips are being used)

Lol. CANBUS seems to be a big issue with my car atm. though less wires, the fault finding can be a pain in the arse. year 2000 subaru would be the version 7 or bug eye…

the last part where you say excluding japanese imports. I’m using one of em, so does that mean that it’ll be a problem for me to use torque on my car? bleh…

Japan’s legeslation for OBD2 is different and most manufacturers in that country aren’t obliged to implement full OBD2 support ( unlike most of the rest of the world) which is why for imports there is an issue of OBD2 support

(this is mostly ECU firmware having the support disabled or restricted, so you should be able to flash a new firmware and remove the restrictions – but that is a little advanced)

SSM /should/ still be present on these vehicles though. At the moment I haven’t tried on anything past the year 2000, so can’t say if you will be able to work or not. However it shouldn’t be too difficult if it is different, to get working

Just posted the latest update – 1.5.48 – SSM support is in this version (requires an OBDKey with firmware 1.30 or above)

I’ve only tested this on a bare metal ECU (with no wheels or engine attached) so feedback would be welcome :)

Hmm doesn’t seem to be connecting to the ecu. Just sent you the log.

A couple of people have sent debugs, but are still using the old version if you are using 1.5.46 it will not work. You must be on 1.5.48 which was sent out last night

okay – I’ve not seen that debug yet then – I have seen a debug from a russian language device that was unfortunately using 1.5.46 though (using PLX bluetooth)
