Post PID only returns data in torque after viewing same PID in OBDLink
on: September 9, 2015 (GMT)

Trying to monitor the current gear of the automatic transmission in torque. I am able to monitor this PID in OBDLink android program that came with the OBDLink MX OBD2 adapter without issue. I am also able to monitor this PID in Torque, but only if I retrieve data for it via the OBDLink program first. i.e. if I start torque without first going into the OBDLink program and use the test function on this PID then torque never receives any data for this PID. If I have viewed this PID in OBDLink first, I can start torque and the PID will be properly displayed and updated on my dashboard. The custom PID definition appears to be identical between torque and OBDLink. Any suggestion on how to get torque to read this PID without having to start OBDLink and test this PID first?

Vehicle: 2015 Chevrolet SS automatic

PID Number: 199A
min value:0
max value:6

You might try specifying the
correct header… or

Maybe a “Tester Present” is needed?

Thanks for the reply. Since there is no header listed for the OBDLink program, how can I determine what header to use? I also don’t understand the reference to “tester present”. Can you elaborate?

The TCM module address for some vehicles
is 7E1. I am not sure for your vehicle.

The OBD command set has a mode that
tells the ECM that a tester is present. Some
diagnostic pids may only be visible after
receiving that command.

There is a Jeep 2007-2011 transmission
temperature thread which demonstrates
the use of the “Tester Present” command
for Jeeps. (It is actually included in the
Jeep’s predefined pids).

Not sure if this command is the same for
your vehicle though. I’m guessing your vehicle
may need a different command.

Thank you again. To get transmission fluid temp to read correctly I did need to send header 7E2. I’ll give that a try for this PID. I will also look into that Jeep topic for “tester present”. Will report results, thanks.
