Post Troubleshooting DTC
on: March 13, 2014 (GMT)

Hello,

I purchased the Torque Pro app as well as the VGate ELM327 OBDII Bluetooth Adapter. First off, the app appears to be mostly working, I can connect to my 2004 Lincoln Navigator and get data.

The concern I have is that when I run the Fault Codes plugin nothing appears, even though I have a check engine light. It tells me the ECU doesn’t have anything stored.

With that said, I’m also trying to understand how to scan for DTC’s related to specific modules in my vehicle. I am having an issue with my Power Lift Gate, and the Ford Service Manual says to check the DTC’s on the module. Can somebody please shed some light on how to do that? Do you have to add specific PID’s?

Thank you very much!
Jeremiah

I had mine do the same thing Friday on a 2001 Ford Taurus. It said that no codes were stored. I then scanned with a shops Snap On scanner and pulled the codes with no problem. I want to be able to use my phone to pull codes quickly but if I can’t count on it to reliably pull codes it is worthless to me. I like the app I just need to work out the bugs before I buy the pay app. I see a lot of uses for it if I can get it worked out so that I can count on it.

Mode 3 returns generic engine and legislated
emissions related dtc codes. If your vehicle
has dtc codes not present in mode 3 then they
are manufacturer specific codes.

Some newer vehicles may choose to use mode 3
to report these but older vehicles typically do not.

Torque does have the ability to execute
OBDII Elm commands which greatly expand
its abilities – if you know the commands.

I highly recommend Torque Pro.

I tried on 2 different vehicles today and found part of the problem. In torque on the 1st vehicle they were setting as pending codes but on the shops scanner they were showing as history codes. On the 2nd vehicle only 3 of 8 codes were setting as pending codes. The rest may be manufacturer specific as they did not show at all , I am not sure. I just got the BT scanner last week so I am sure that I will have some operator errors while I learn how to use it. So far it looks like a great program though !

Your shop scanner has the extra commands to
read the manufacturer specific codes beyond
mode 3 by status and function.

Can your shop scanner report mode 3 dtcs
only to see how well it matches Torque?

Sorry I took so long to reply. If I get a chance on Monday I will check but it sounds like that is the answer though !

Can you elaborate on the OBDII Elm commands you were referring to?

.
This should help with understanding
elm commands…

ht tp://elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM327DS.pdf

Beyond that, you will need to search the web for
your vehicle’s protocol and resetting DTCs using
an Elm adapter.
