Post How to change protocol/not connecting to ECU
on: July 26, 2020 (GMT)

Hello. I have a problem that elm327 not connecting to ECU, program just automatically looking for protocols and stays in loop. I guess I have to change protocol manually but can anyone tell me how to do that?

Car is 2005 Volvo S40 2.5T T5 (The same engine in C30, V50, V70, even Ford focus ST), as far as I know protocol should be CAN29bit 500kb, correct me if I’m wrong. That elm adapter connects fine to other cars.

Well, I am not as knowledgeable as the most active forum participants, but I will try to help. To manually adjust the protocol, you create a profile for the vehicle, edit the profile and look for the “preferred OBDII protocol” field in the advanced settings. If you already know the vehicle’s protocol, adjust it. Otherwise, test one of the options, until you find the one that connects properly.
