Post 2018 Toyota Sienna Trans temp - no data
on: January 28, 2019 (GMT)

I am trying to get transmission temperature for my 2018 toyota Sienna. I have been attempting to use PID 2182 and 21D9, but I get “no data” errors. In fact, I have tried to query a number of 21xx PIDs and so far none have come back with data. I tried several, including 2100, 2101, 2102

My understanding is the 21 OBD mode is for Toyota, and if the commands list is structured like the 01 mode, then 2100 should return a bitfield of which 2101-2120 commands are supported. 2100 returns no data…again, assuming the command structure is similar to the 01 mode, then that would suggest 21 mode isn’t supported.

I am able to query other modes/PIDS (like 0100, 0120, 0140 etc), so the tool is working, and I am getting normal data…just not Toyota related data, it seems.

Any suggestions?

then 2100 not should return a bitfield of which 2101-2120 commands are supported

PIDs Temp Transmission:
221627
221628
Header: 701

Thank you very much for the response.

I tried this (only tried 221627) and I got back what appears to be valid data.

I have a few questions if you don’t mind answering:

1. What do these two PIDs represent? Are these two different sensors for transmission temperature, or different PIDs for different vehicles?
2. Is there a list anywhere for all PIDs for Toyota?
3. Is 221 some alternative “Toyota” mode (it seems that in other posts 21 is what gets used)
4. What is the header value for?

I would also like to get engine oil temperature – do you know a PID for that?

Thanks again – very helpful.

PIDs Temp Transmission:
221627 Temperature Transmission Sensor 1
221628 Temperature Transmission Sensor 2
usually one sensor is placed in the pan and the second in the oil pressure line

engine oil temperature not all car brands support

3. Is 221 some alternative “Toyota” mode (it seems that in other posts 21 is what gets used) – Toyota uses modes 01, 21, 22
4. What is the header value for? transmission unit address

I appreciate the replies. I have been able to get a value from 221627 that is consistent with transmission temperature. 221628 provides data, but it it is always 0xFF, so I presume there is only one transmission sensor on my vehicle.

I’m still confused about how the different modes/PIDs are structured. For most commands they are two bytes / 4 hex digits. Two for the mode, two for the PID. In this case there are 3 bytes / 6 hex digits. So is it mode 22, with a 2 byte PID?

Are there any resources online that list all Toyota PIDs?

Thanks again

mode 01xx, xx=256 variant PIDs
mode 21xx, xx=256 variant PIDs
mode 22xxxx, xxxx=65536 variant PIDs
for modern cars, with the ability to display a large number of parameters, there are not enough 256 variants of PIDs, so the 22xxxx mode is used
