Post Kills engine!!! 7.3L '01 Powerstroke
on: March 20, 2018 (GMT)

I recently had purchased the ELM327 and it works flawlessly with Torque Pro in my Focus. When I put it in my ’01 F250 Powerstroke, it kills the engine. I selected the option for the bugs in the settings and it still did it. It also isn’t reading any PID’s except for Revs. I tried slowing the reading speed down to no avail. Any guidance out there?

Your 7.3 isn’t fully OBDII compliant from
what I have read in this forum.

Make sure you are only adding pids
known to your vehicle. For example,
after adding the Ford Predefined Custom PIDs
with KOEO test each pid within the pid
editor for a valid response. Remove any pids
that fail to respond.

Referencing unknown pids can cause stumbling.

Make sure Auto Scan is disabled.

Don’t go into Adapter Status icon information
which includes a mode 9 call.

Use the special setting for bugged Ford ECUs.

Make sure you are using the latest version of
Torque Pro from Google Play. 1.8.199 at the
time of this post.

There are other 7.3 Torque Pro users so hopefully
they will respond.

I followed your instructions and tested all the major PIDs. Not one was responding. Any ideas?

I would check with Ford specific forums to see
if there is something about your 2001 ECU which
may need enabling first.

As you can read on the link posted above, the older
7.3s appeared to read pids. Just curious as to what
protocol your 2001 uses?

Hi!

That’s the issue with the fords – basically it’s a bugged ECU that causes the ECU crash then reboot (hence the engine stopping) when the bug happens.

There’s a special setting in the settings- special options called, F150 bug workaround that will *attempt* to not trigger the bug,

However I can only recommend that you don’t use any OBD app if you have the ECU with that bug as sometimes the chinese adapters send different commands than requested (and this can also trigger the bug)

Unfortunately the only way to fix this properly is to replace the ECU firmware (or ECU) with one that has the bug fixed – iirc it only applies to some F1/250’s built within a 3 month manufacturing window
