Post MPG Calculation for Diesel PU
on: July 16, 2010 (GMT)

I drive a 2009 Chevy Silverado with a 6.6 l diesel engine. My MPG on Torque is reported as 5.2 mpg (average on the way to work today) but I am getting upwards of 16 mpg. Is there a way to get the correct MPG reading with a diesel PU?

Also noticed the coolant temp was reading 102 degrees this morning when I had just started the truck. I highly doubt it got that hot within seconds of starting the vehicle. The gauge measuresments do not match the numeric output on that display either. I think the needle was pointing at 123 degrees when the numeric value was reading 180 degrees (ferinheit).

Catalyst test never completed and heat catalyst reported as not observed.

0-60 test and Torque reading look pretty accurate today. Did that get updated in the latest update? Cuz it never worked for me before.

I’ll provide more feedback as I play with this thing. But it looks like right now diesel pu does not play nice with Torque.

Hi

Diesel MPG is currently being worked on – it’ll be out in the next few releases as I just need to add support for the fuel type detection in the ECU.

As to the temperature, the reading displayed on screen is directly from the ECU, it’s not converted at all apart from the conversion from farenheight to degrees and that works, if you read 102 on the display (what display are you using, dial, graph or digital readouts?), then basically that will because thats what your vehicles ECU told Torque what the temperature was – if it happens again, and you see that, please send me a comms debug log so I can confirm it. The only other possibility it could be would be a comms problem if you have the cheapo ebay adapter (but it would be highly unlikely to affect it like this)

The drive cycle stuff can take a while to complete. On my roadster it may take several drives before all the tests are marked as ‘complete’. This feature is still in beta so there may be a bug in the updating. I may have to write some documentation on it.

The temp display is a dial gauge. In the middle of the gague it has numeric reading that is accurate. But the scale of the gauge is not. The needle points at say 90 degrees while the numeric value displayed in the middle of that same dial gauge is 180 degrees. Are you saying that the ECU is sending two values? That doesn’t make any sense.

Weird thing is I got another update of Torque this morning. I ran the update. I plugged Torque in and the reading on the dial was correct. I then noticed a message saying the update of Torque did not install. I redownloaded and it installed this time. I re-ran Torque and the problem was back. So…this seems to be an intermittent problem. But more times than not it is wrong. I will send you a comm debug report when I leave work today. Should be somewhere around 1 pm PST. I have to pick up a heavy trailer and try out the Torgue measure too so it should be fun. I’ll send a log before the trailer and then again after picking up the trailer…just for S&Gs.

Thanks for quick responses and all your work on this. It makes it fun when you get to work with the developer.

Ian,

I finally sent you the comms debug report. I was searching all over for the option to send this report but looking in all the wrong places. Finally found it this morning and sent it with no message from nateccnn at gmail dot com.

On the Engine Coolant Temp dial the red line indicating highest temp read is somewhere between the needle pointer and the actual temp reading (as displayed digitally in the middle of the dial). It’s closer to the actual temp than the needle is…hope that helps.

Ian,

Did you receive the comm debug I sent? I wonder if I sent it correctly.

Has this issue been resolved. I just purchased the Torque and the MPG, both instant & average, are way off (to low). I have the latest version from App Market.

Hi, how many cylinders and what fuel type is your vehicle? and have you entered your engine size in the settings?

Hey Ian! I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado Duramax diesel 8 cylinder 6.6L. I have entered everything in the setting including the weight as 2522Kg.

Thanks! Mike

Ah, that’ll be why your figures are out – diesel at the moment isn’t supported by the MPG calculation – mainly due to the differences between the way the engines work.

Diesel MPG will be supported – I have promised this to others but been a bit lax about adding support (not having access to a diesel doesn’t really help), so I should get moving on this again soon.

You probably won’t see it this side of the year, probably early’ish next year as I need to have a bit of R&R instead of coding apps each night since May :)

Thanks Ian! I’ll be waiting for it. This parameter is one of the reasons I purchased Torque. I assume that the info coming from the PCU is not really MPG but something you must manipulate. I tow an RV and wanted to get readings for MPG, torgue, HP, load and anything else I can get. I have the PIDs from your GM setting but I was wondering if there is a place I can get all available codes for my truck. I’ve been searching the web and it seems these codes are top secret :-(

I’d also like to know if there is a tutorial on your program. For instance, the syntax for extended PIDs with equation examples. Also, is there a way to use multiple PIDs in one equation?

Thanks for all your work and enjoy your R&R!

Yep the extended codes are very hard to come by, it’s a shame.

MPG is worked out from several sensors on the ECU (for petrol it’s MAP/MAF, a couple of static fields RPM and something else whcih escapes me right now), I can’t cheat a little and use stoichiometric air/fuel ratios for diesel I have to come up with a different way to calculate the MPG used

It may take a couple of attempts before I get the MPG 100% for diesel when I get around to doing it – feedback will be welcomed :)

Can’t wait! I think this resonates with us diesel types since most of us are hyper mpg-aware.

I had posted previously about adding a simple multiplier to cheat and “calibrate” the current system to match what I’m measuring at the pump, but evidently I didn’t generate any interest.

Most other gadgets used for mpg (scangauge, kiwi mpg, ecoroute hd) all utilize a calibration process that gets around the different ways the car manufacturers (and fuel types) handle their data. Is there a reason Torque doesn’t use a similar method? It seems that by adding the ability to calibrate the unit one would be able to get quite close.

But obviously the preferred method would be to not have to calibrate. If that is something us diesel-heads can expect from Torque, then I’d be elated.

BTW, Torque is hands down the coolest app I have on my Droid X. Great work.

I also have a duramax diesel, and the turbo boost gauge seems off. At 60mph cruising speed it shows less than 1psi when the real mechanical gauge is showing 4.6psi.

Love 1960’s muscle cars and a diesel fanatic. =)

How did you get your duramax on that anorexic diet? Only 5550 lbs?

Hi, I share the same thoughts as “mikewr007”. I recently purchased torque and the MPG readings (litres per kilometre in my case)are significantly out. I own a 3.0l diesel powered Toyota Landcruiser Prado.

At the moment, i’m looking to get a refund, as for my situation, the software doesn’t do what i need it to.

Admittedly I did not think to check if the application has issues with calculating diesel fuel results because other gauges that I have come across don’t have issue with this ie scanguage2 works fine with diesel engines and in my case for a Toyota Landcruiser Prado.

Is this issue likely to be rectified soon?

Thanks,
Pete

Is diesel now supported? I have a 2011 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series 4.5 liter V8 diesel Sahara. I have tried numerous different settings but cannot get liters per hundred Km anywhere near accurate. If diesel is now supported, can you give me some tips on what I could be doing wrong. I have input the curb weight plus additional weight, fuel type diesel, engine size 4.461, but have left volumetric efficiency at 85 because I am unable to find the correct number for this for my vehicle. I am using an OBDlink MX Scantool.
I would be grateful for any assistance.

Did you ever get this sorted out? I have an LC200TD and have never managed to get the fuel calibrated.

I’m also wondering what the status is for reading diesel MPG (instant)? I just purchased Torque Pro thinking it support diesel trucks (mine is a Ford F250 6.7L), but I can only get some basic displays to work. Can you give status and update on diesel engine support please?

Give this a try, I don’t think I would expect a 5 dollar App to have all the PIDs for every vehicle.

PID: “leave blank”
Long Name: MPG (Instant) 6.7L
Short Name: MPG
Min: 0
Max 100
Scale factor: x1
Unit Type:
Equation: (([0d]*0.621371)/([5e]*0.264172))

I’m getting my first car in a couple of days and was wondering whether Torque now supports Diesel MPG calculation.
