Post ABS-related Fault codes only while using torque

Right.

To me this sounds silly, but as the evidence is overwhelmingly pointing towards Torque I have to post this question here.

My problem is that my 2013 Ford S-Max throws numerous abs-related u-codes on a regular basis. It has happened 5 times now in a 2 week period. Not every drive and not every day… But when it does happen I have always had torque running through my android head unit.

Symptoms:

abs light
traction control light
check engine light
brake fault light (red hand brake light)
transmission Limited function light
speedo shows 0 alhough still moving.

This a list of the codes:

===PCM DTC U0415:86-AF===
Code: U0415 – Invalid Data Received From ABS Control Module

===PCM DTC U0129:87-2E===
Code: U0129 – Lost Communication with Brake System Control Module A

===PCM DTC U0418:08-2F===
Code: U0418 – Invalid Data Received from Brake System Control Module A

===OBDII DTC U0415-C===
Code: U0415 – Invalid Data Received from the ABS Control Module

===RCM DTC U0121:00-2C===
Code: U0121 – Lost Communication With ABS Control Module

===PSCM DTC U0129:00-2C===
Code: U0129 – Lost Communication with Brake System Control Module A

===BCMii DTC U0121:00-6C===
Code: U0121 – Lost Communication With ABS Control Module

after driving a few minutes with the cel lit it will also throw this:

p1635 tire / axle ratio out of acceptable range

Yes… I have a cheap chinese elm-adapter. Never had problems with it before.

Forscan works perfectly and faults have never come up with the adapter plugged in and forscan up and running. I use Forscan more frequently for PID’s so I reckon it has more up-time than torque… Still no faults.

Also. The faults have never come up with no obd-connection present. I don’t always have the dongle plugged in.

The faults show up mid-drive. That is to say not at startup or even at torque startup. .(i’ve seen others have problems at start up) Just doing 25 miles/h in traffic 25 minutes into my drive home from work. They have nothing to do with touching the brake pedal either.

I run multiple torque widgets on my second home screen. Use the toggle widget, so it’s not always on. Coolant, ecu-speed, gps-speed, l/km instant, l/km average, l/km trip etc. (too much traffic maybe?)

My head unit hooks up to the car can bus to be able to control stuff in the dash… streeing wheel volume buttons and radio etc. (a factor maybe?)

Ford dealer had a look at the car and can’t find anything wrong with it.

What is going on with these codes? Am I barking up the wrong tree here or can communication between torque and ecu cause vital car communication to fail and trow codes??

Hi!

Unfortunateyl it’s definitely your OBD2 adapter that is faulty on the CANBUS protocol – you will need to get it replaced – CANBUS errors are a known issue with some of the chinese clones.

When the adapter glitches it locks up the CANBUS line and prevents modules from talking to each other. This is what you’re seeing with the fault codes being logged.

To minimise this you can go into the vehicle profile and select the protocol your vehicle uses (as it usually happens when the adpater resets and then starts searching for the correct protocol that the vehicle uses)

Ultimately though you have a bad OBD2 adapter and should get it replaced

OK… That was quick. And convincing. Thank You.

Probably havent broken or fried my ecu then? If it sill works and I never plug a chinese piece of waste in it again I should be fine?

What still bothers me though is why always the same ABS faults… Why not erratically throw whatever communication error it happened to glitch? There must be other communication going on all the time…

Hi!

They’re transient faults – you should be able to clear them with the fault code clear command or (at worst) disconnecting the battery for a minute or two (don’t forget to note any stereo/alarm codes)

They’re the same communications errors basically because it is the same type of error each time (corrupt data, can’t see the module anymore) – the comms from the ECUs is basically constant (they’re all talking, all the time to each other, for example your ABS ECU is usually telling your speedo what your speed is, etc, etc)

You may be able to mitigate the issue though by forcing the protocol to use in the profile settings (CANBUS, probably 11 bit, 250 or 500k – it’ll tell you in the adapter status screen when you’re connected) – this will prevent the adapter for searching for the protocol to use, though I suspect the adpater is glitching at the faster communication speeds that Torque can do (even though it should work solidly at that speed, some of the chinese clones aren’t too great)

Thank You very much for Your expert opinion.

I’ll probably have 3-4 hours more sleep tomorrow night than for the past 2 weeks now that I KNOW what the h*ll is goin on.
