Post Connection to Adaptor but No Connection to ECU (MK4 Golf)
on: February 17, 2011 (GMT)

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought the Torque APP, its fantastic.

However when I plug it into my VW Golf Mk4 I can connect to the adaptor but I can not connect to the ECU.

I plugged the OBDII device into the cars OBDII socket and a series of flashing lights appeared. I turned on the ignition and paired my adaptor to my bluetooth on my HTC Wildfire, it paired successfully. I then opened the Torque APP and in the settings chose the device (which I had just paried) then closed the app and restarted it. I went back into the settings and I could see that the “Bluetooth” was enabled and there was a connection to the adaptor. However it could not connect to the ECU.

I used to have VAGCOM and that worked fine with my car via the USB OBDII lead which I bought off eBay. But I recently purchased the Bluetooth Adaptor and the Torque App.

I thought it could be my car so I tried it on my dads Jaguar X-Type and it works perfectly.

My dad took it to a friends garage and they could not connect with their equipment. I thought it could be a blown fuse but I have checked all the fuses in the car.

P.S Even tried disconnecting the battery also.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I think it depends on the adaptor, in this case.

Even though it connects to the phone via BT, it might not be able to match the rates needed for the mk4.

I have had a similar issue: Use a cheap ebay adapter…which works fine in a 97 Polo w 2001 Polo GTI engine/ECU… but in similar cars from around that time, it will not connect to the ECU.

If you have the cheap OBD 2 adapter, odds are that is where the problem is unfortunately :(

But its not just the BT adaptor that doesn’t work.

A garage has used two of their wired systems with the professional kit and they could not connect to the ECU.

I can verify that the eBay bluetooth adapter will work with Mk4 Volkswagens. It works fine on my ’01 GTI 1.8T. Sounds like something is wrong with your OBD port on your car. Perhaps some of the pins inside the connector are bent or pushed back so they are not making a connection?

I have the same issue with the new update. I used to connect just fine but after the update it doesn’t connect to the ECU.

What do you mean “update”? Update with regards to the Torque app or mobile phone or vehicle?

You may have a bad control module in your vehicle.
VW/Audi vehicles use can bus connections to enable control modules to “talk” to each other.
If a control module goes bad, it can “tie up” the can bus communication, thereby making any communication impossible with a scantool. (Thus the reason the garage with a regular scantool can’t communicate with the car, either.)
Really, the only way to figure out which module is jamming the can bus is to unplug control modules one at a time until you can finally communicate with the vehicle with the scan tool.
A common module that goes bad is the ABS module, and its easy to get to. Disconnect that and try to connect with the scantool.

Hi,

I will try unplugging the module.

Where do I find this ABS module? And how does it disconnect?

First of all, this is a very nice app, usefull. I’m happy with it, keep up the good work and improvements.

I’m sending you the comms debug log becauseI’m not getting connection since updating to V 1.4.6
I’ve sent the comms debug log to myself and after adding some more info which might be helpfull I’ll forward it to you.

– Car symbol keeps flashing
– ‘No response from vehicle ECU’ pop-up
– Automatic protocol search is busy in status bar. And it keeps checking protocols again and again.

Changing ‘Fast mode to True’ and ‘Disable Speed adaption to True’ won’t improve things.

In ‘Adapter Status’:
BT Enabled: yes/OK
Connection to adapter: yes/OK
Connection to ECU: no/!
Adaptor Error Count: 0
Adapter Manufacturer: ? I’m using the BT version of http://www.obd-shop.com/danila/product_details.php?id=370&lang=de , with the controller from http://www.dxm.obd-diag.net/html/dxm_innovation1.html
Adapter Version: Diamex DXM V1.7
Adapter Notes: Nothing to report

Note: with V 1.4.5 the Error Count was 1, still the adapter/Torque functioned apparently OK.
And with V 1.4.4 everything OK, no problems

Vehicle: Toyota Verso D4D D-Cat 2008, Diesel

Please help.

Thank you in advance,
Best regards, Willy

Hi, No I have not got an aftermarket radio. I have the standard gamma cassette/radio with the 6 disc cd changer.

Any ideas? Still not connecting to ECU

I had the same sort of connection problem, would not connect to ECU.

Just by chance I worked out this procedure that seems to work:

1. Car not running, ignition OFF.
2. Plug in interface to car.
3. Bluetooth on phone ON. Interface paired.
4. Turn on torque. It will quickly show a Bluetooth connection but will not connect to the ECU.
5. Wait till the message “No responce from ECU, Is ignition on?” This will take a minute or so to appear.
6. Turn on ignition!

Now, in a few seconds the ECU connects and all is well. I have tested this 3 or 4 times, so far so good.

No, this is not perfect but it is worth a try. No, I do not know why it works for me!

Just an animated pile of junk…

Just tried it in my mates Mk.4 Golf 1.8T and sorry to say it wouldn’t connect either yet I put it back in my Laguna to show him and it worked without a problem?

Same thing as others, connect to BT but no talky talky to ECU?

Most bizarre?

You waited till the “is ignition on” message?
