Has anyone had any luck with this? As of June 2013 the gm method 1 and 2 still only read at 32F, and the “other” method 3 still reads the coolant temp.

It reads normally on my Chevy Express Van around 178F. I use GM Method 2.

Just to add to the mix – I am also trying to get the transmission temp reading to work properly. Mine sets to 75.2F and never changes (just went for a 240 mile ride, stayed at 75.2F the entire time). This is for GM Method 1, GM Method 2 never gets a reading (just a ‘dash’ in the middle of the gauge).

Vehicle is a 2004 Chevrolet 2500HD with 6.6L diesel and Allison Transmission.

Sensor is a BAFX 34t5.

Any insight on getting this combination to read transmission temps would be greatly appreciated as it is the main reason for getting the sensor.

As GM Method 2 was not working already, I changed the header on that method to 7E0 as mentioned in previous post – no change.

What protocol does your 2004 use?

Edit:

For VPW you might try 6C10F1 or 6C18F1.
For CAN you might try 7E0 or 7E2.

I am new enough to all this that I don’t know the answer to that question. From what I have searched for here so far I assume this is the entry for the Header?

While connected to your vehicle look
under adaptor status icon functions
to see protocol in use.

The headers I suggested in previous
post can be tested while in the pid
editor for a valid response.

As a side note, I’ll also see if I can add a ‘seen headers’ item to the ‘adapter status’ screen in the app in an update, so this can give you a better idea of what ECU’s are responding (and where they are) as this would probably be quite helpful!

=================
Ok, I checked the protocol with this result: J1850 VPW (10.4K)

Adapter version: ELM317 V1.5

Available Sensors from ECU:
* # of troubleshooting codes & I/M info
* Calculated Engine load
* Engine Coolant Temp
* Intake Manifold pressure
* Engine RPM
* Vehicle speed
* Intake air temp
* MPF air flow rate
* ODB standards this vehicle conforms to
* Auxiliary input status
* Fuel rail pressure

I tried the codes 6C10F1 for GM 1
and 6C18F1 for GM 2, with both then reading 24C (75.2F), let the truck run for about 10 minutes with no change to the readings.

Not sure if I added too much info, but I figured the more info – the better. :)

Can you post the raw hex response? I’m
wondering if the ~75° is what your ecu is
seeing?

Looking to see 621940xxyy or is it
7F22…?

Edit:

Curious if you are dealing with a
sensor/harness/ground issue?

Not sure if I did this correctly, but I went into the PID editor and clicked ‘Test’.

For Transmission Fluid Temp (GM1) – set to 6C10F1 I see:
6CF1107F22194012FC

For Transmission Fluid Temp (GM2) – set to 6C18F1 I see:
6CF1107F22194012F6

Please let me know if I need to gather some other data, really trying to get this working. :)

End Quote.

The 7F22… response is unsuccessful. The
6C18F1 response as written is from “10” (ECU)
unless there’s a typo.

Edit:

I was thinking your allison would use the
TCM version?

These are the settings I used for the responses received above which for this was: 6CF1107F22194012FC
Still searching all over google looking for some insight along with the great support here.

PID Editor:
OBD2 Mode and PID (in hex – eg: ’01 0D’ for speed) or empty if ‘[internal_pid]’ is used in the equation:
221940

Long name (used in menus)
Transmission Flud Temp (GM Method 1)

Short name (used in displays)
Trans.Fl.Tmp

Minimum value (typically 0)
0.0

Maximum value
200.0

Scale factor:
X1

Unit type
°C

Equation (eg: A * B + 20 or: [od]+10+A or even just: [0d])
A-40

OBD Header to use (Leave blank, ‘Auto’ or HEX header)
6C10F1

Diagnostic start command
{blank}

Diagnostic stop command
{blank}

Edit:
Note: In the process of running Scan Codes and noticed that there was no response for 221940. Waiting for the full scan to complete.

Scan finally completed, total of 111 codes with responses, all between 2401 and 214f, nothing higher than that.

Scan was done with the truck idling in Park in the driveway, should the scan be done while driving around?

I would be curious about the TCM.

From what I’ve read on the web the allisons
seemed to report from the TCM using the
same pid. Yours doesn’t seem to respond
using 6C18F1.

This link might be helpful read.

Thanks for all the tips Capp777. I checked that link and didn’t find anything that seemed to help.

Seems strange that the scan only shows the limited # of responses as I posted 2 messages up. Not sure what to check now.

when you start scanning, you specify the header with the address of the control unit

cintakc, thanks for the info. Ran the scan again as per your input with this result for command 221940
6CF1186219403C4D

Successfully emailed the results to myself yesterday, today when I tap ’email’, nothing happens – the menu just goes away???
Not sure what happened there.

Edit:
Also ran the scan for 6C10F1 – with very few responses, most came back ‘No Data’.

Test PIDs
….
Equation (eg: A * B + 20 or: [od]+10+A or even just: [0d])
A-40
OBD Header to use (Leave blank, ‘Auto’ or HEX header)
6C18F1
Diagnostic start command

I was just getting ready to make an entry as I did see a change after another full scan.

1st scan: 221940 = 6CF1186219403C4D
2nd scan: 221940 = 6CF1186219404F33

Edit:
Any idea why it will no longer email the results? It worked yesterday on my phone, today tried to email results with both the phone and my tablet. Tap on email and the menu just goes away, no options to enter an email address, etc.

Its nice to see 6C18F1 responding with
data as expected:

3C = 20°C = 68°F
4F = 39°C = 102°F

Are you only getting data after running
Torquescan or does testing the pid work
with the 6C18F1 header?

I’m now wondering if this is a “tester present”
or “diagnostics enable” issue.

=====================
I just ran out and fired it up and ran the test pid with a result of
6CF1187F22194012F6

Then ran Torquescan until it got up a little past the 221940 item to check it – result code was
6CF11862194059B0
Turned right around and ran the test PID with the same result as before of
6CF1187F22194012F6

I’m thinking that Torquescan is issueing
the appropriate command for tester present
or diagnostic enable which is allowing you
to “see” the data. (Jeep TFT pids also require
the extra command to work.). Just not certain
what the GM version of the commands would
be.

Maybe someone with a little more knowledge
can assist?

I believe the tester present command has to
be issued every few seconds or it will expire.

Jeep example… yours maybe different.
