Hello

I am using the torque app / GM PID 221940 for transmission fluid temperature.

Why does the formula have “-40” subtracted from A (A-40)?

This is common in the GM specific fluid temperature PIDS.

It is a standardized way of handling
readings below 0°C (32°F).

Is A = ambient temperature?

Just trying to figure out the construction of the formula.

(or should I just accept that is how GM PIDS are written and stop overthinking?)

Torque parses the hex response data into
variables A, B, etc.

Variable A represents the value of the first
data byte.

If you “test” the response in the pid editor,
while connected to your vehicle, the raw hex
response will be shown.

Another – perhaps simpler – way of saying it is: It allows a single byte “A” to represent temperature readings from -40º to 215º INSTEAD of 0º to 255º.
