Post Torque and BlueStacks Android Apps Player for Windows
on: September 15, 2011 (GMT)

I have been following the development of the Bluestacks software with a lot of interest. This is the Windows software that is intended to enable running Android apps in Windows PC – http://www.bluestacks.com/

I do have a Windows CarPc in my Jeep and I have been hoping that Torque could be adapted to use in Windows. Maybe now this will be possible with BlueStacks? Perhaps Ian might wish to talk to Bluestack guys to enable torque compatibility. The Alpha build of the software is set to be released on October 11th to the beta testers of which I have registered through their Facebook page. This might mean even posibilty of using Torque via USB for those with USB OBDII adapters…. Just dreaming about the possibilities :)

Not sure how the serial interface would be presented in android, or how it would be controlled, however it certainly looks interesting! I’ll probably have a play with it once it’s released – also I wonder if they support a bluetooth interface.

Pwned, I’m interested in what you did for the CarPC. I googled it and found a bunch of items but not a complete solution.

Actually I did not do the CarPc in the strict sense of the term. What I did is I converted my 2 year old UMPC (remember that form factor?) into a full time car pc. I have the HTC Shift which is a 7 inch touchscreen which I mounted securely and is now dedicated to teh car – http://www.pocketables.net/2008/04/unboxing-the-ht.html

I have however been thinking of replacing it with a 7 inch cheap Android tab. I have in mind the Huawei Ideos S7 Slim which is very good and affordable. However if Bluestacks prove to be what it says it will do then I have no need to replace the “CarPc”. The Shift uses an actual HDD and I always fear that some rough road driving can damage the hard disk… :(

My race toy is an 88 fiero and the interior needs a refresh in a big way. When I found Torque I immediately started thinking about a new dash with an Andriod tablet. Now you have me thinking about the CarPC but I still think the tablet is a better option.

@gatremag1 good thing is that these days we are spoilt for choice. An Android Tab is very good with apps like Torque. The biggest limitation with the Tabs is that most of them do not have the USB host functionality. Thus you cannot use external Hdds or flash disks. There is also the small issue of what file types Android can read…. That is where Windows 8 Tabs will come in to fill the gap. I cant wait for the Windows 8 tabs to become available I get a 7 inch tab and mount it in the car. But with time Ian will have to consider porting this app to Windows PC.

I have an extra screen in the Jeep that I use for rear view with a camera mounted at the back which is useful especially when pulling a trailer. It also doubles up as reversing camera. So for now I have decided to keep the Windows CarPc and also get a cheap 7 inch Ideos Tab to use with Torque and other Android apps. The Ideos Tab has the extra advantage of having phone functions and I am told there is some hack that enables USB host with it. Exciting times ahead for in-car entertainment enthusiasts….. 😉

Whaooh that is very interesting. Is it Torque as we know it ported to Windows PC and Windows mobile or a similar app? A PC version of Torque would save some of us some dollars with which we would have spent buying an Android tab. I am sure Ian would not object to such an app. After all most of us already bought Torque for our phones it is only that we need that extra flexibility offered by bigger screens. Right Ian? :)

thanks pwnd for the info. I see you’ve given this some thought. would you be interested in taking this conversation offline? I would like to talk more about in-care ideas that aren’t necessarily Torque related.

I see this thread is a year old and wonder what happened ?

Is just before the new year & the market is starting to see I3, I5, and N2760 tablets able to run the full windows OS (Windows 8 NOT RT) with the battery life associated with tablets.

I suspect that we will see 7″ tablets with these OSs 2-3Q13 and is going to be a gamechanger. Why settle for Android or iOS when tablets can and will run Windows, Linux, and maybe even MacOS.

One is here now that is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than an iPad, is running Windows 8 Pro, and can support a 24″ 1920×1080 monitor. Also has Bluetooth built in.

So am interested in whether anyone has made Torque and BlueStacks work in a Windows environment ? YWTK.

I’ve been able to run Torque in BlueStacks on my Samsung Slate 7 Series and Windows 8, I can run it and create a profile, but I cannot get it to connect to my adapter. I know BlueStacks doesn’t currently support Bluetooth, so I also tried a wi-fi adapter, but still no luck. Has anyone else been successful?

I can confirm Torque will run in BlueStacks and work with a wi-fi adapter. You have to change your PC wi-fi adapter settings to use an IP address outside of the OBD II adapters IP (in my case I had to change it to 192.168.0.11). Once that is done, plug the OBD II adapter in and look for the wi-fi network it’s broadcasting. Connect your PC to that network, then launch Torque. In Torque, change the OBD II adapter type to wi-fi, make sure the IP address matches that of the adapter (in my case 192.168.0.10, port 35000). It connected almost immediately, but did take a bit to load the profile. At any rate, it works!
