Connected to Bluetooth but not to ECU

Going to try to document this here, since a lot of people ask and I'll try to make it more searchable.

- Check the vehicle profile. Make sure the protocol is set to ‘Automatic (Fast)’ and the OBD2 adapter is set to ‘As defined in Global OBD2 settings’. Then check that you have told Torque to use that vehicle profile.

- If that doesn't work, then Set the protocol to “Automatic – Thorough protocol scan” and wait. It might take a few minutes connect the first time.

If neither of those work:
- Google the protocol for your year/make/model of vehicle. Enter that protocol into the vehicle profile manually.

Some of the reasons for the issues are:
- There are several different protocols on those pins on the OBD2 plug. Some cars use one protocol (one set of pins), and some cars use another protocol (different set of pins). When using a cheap clone, they don't always automatically detect the protocol correctly, so this may cause one car to work, and another faults.

- The adapter has faulty hardware on the protocol the vehicle uses. This is unfortunately fairly common on some of clone adapters commonly found on E-Bay/Amazon. It usually manifests as working on one manufacturers vehicle, but not a different manufactures (different manufacturers use different wires/protocols in the adapter, and sometimes they’re not all working due to a fault). Unfortunately this will need you to get a replacement adapter

I tried the different settings to no avail, so I guess I need to buy a higher quality adapter.

Can a list be compiled of adapters that will work with my 2001 Corvette? Right now, I have bought two different adapters, but neither worked on the Corvette, but worked fine on my 2009 Yukon. I really want this to work on my car, but want a working adapter.

I recommend the OBDLink LX or MX. Not as cheap as the ebay/amazon ripoffs, but they should work with any OBD2 car built after 1996.

I just bought 4 adapters on Amazon, all different and all were missing the parts for J1850 GM cars 96-2007. That's why one of your cars worked and another did not. The adapters all worked on CAN (2008 and later). Something is going on here with these Chinese adapters. They were all different types and different sellers. Installing the missing parts fixed them.

Resistors, caps, diodes, transistors, regulator IC
These two boards are almost identical but the one on the left works for all protocols and the one on the right bought recently does not. This was typical of the 4 different adapters I purchased lately.

thank you for explanation and picture. We should be aware of such over-economy tendency in the future (my cheap chinese adapter works with my old Mazda over PWM, so i assume i had a luck when purchased it a year ago)

I have a 2001 gmc savana 5.7L van. I have a AUTEL CAN 0BDII wired scan tool that works fine displaying codes. I have Torque Pro with a ELM327 mini bluetooth dongle/interface. I have Torque Pro running on a samsung galaxy tab3 tablet model SM-T217S, android version 4.4.2.
My problem is that I plug in the interface/dongle and activate Torque Pro on the tablet. Torque pro finds the dongle and contacts it, but cannot contact the ECU. It appears to scan all the protocols, then logs off the dongel, shortly tries again with the same result. I have notice several protocols have the 'can' in their description, any significance ???? Any assistance with this problem would be appreciated.

I have a paid for Torque which has the latest update.
It has stopped communicating to Any ODBII device instead it wants to connect to other blue tooth devices that are not meant for it.
Example my hearing aid remote.
I have disabled and removed this device from my phone and pointed the Torque app to the ODB!! interface, but no go still will not connect. I un-installed and re install the app still no good.
So I down loaded the FREE torque and it communicates with no problem at all. But of course does not have the features I Want.
PS my vehicle is Dodge Nitro.

Any suggestions.

Sounds like you have overridden the main app bluetooth settings in the vehicle profile (and set a specific device in the vehicle profile to connect to)

Go into the Vehicle profile, edit it, scroll down to the bottom and you should then see the adapter selection box (Change it to 'As defined in global OBD2 settings)

Took a few minutes to find it.
Changed it and will try it when the sun comes up.

OK had to wait so My staring the Vehicle would not wake up anyone.
The correction of the Vehicle profile solved the issue.
No Idea how it was ever set to look at the Mac address that it did. But all is well so I will know how to reset next time.
