Ian, Great app. My BT OBD2 is in the mail, I can't wait to use it.
I wanted this primarily for the transmission temperature from my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 12v Cummins Diesel. The motor itself logs very little to the OBD2. I think throttle position, possibly RPM, and maybe coolant temp. However, I'm 99% sure it does transmission temp through the ECU.
How would I go about adding a gauge for trans temp? Can you point me in the right direction?

Looking for the same for my 2006 Nissan Titan. I know it's reported as I had a high end scanner connected that reported 2 temps for the tranny from 2 sensors. I've got the blue tooth adapter ordered and an EVO 4g and archos 10" tablet ready to go =]

Multi ecu support (which *should* include transmission temps) should be coming as part of the the next update.
The most recent updates have not enabled access to the transmission temperature extended PID for my vehicle (2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited).
The gauge can be added, and transmission temperature selected, but there is no data to show.
The 2010 Wrangler definately monitors transmission fluid temperature but without the extended PID for this parameter it's a no go. The pre-loaded extended PIDs for Ford and GM are not compatible with Jeep.

I'll need a comms debug log to be sent whilst you are connected and the transmission dial is displayed on the screen (in the latest build release about 30mins ago, 1.4.4)

This is a debug file for the developer. If you have a problem, it would be really cool if you could take the time to add a description of what your issue is and I will have a better chance of fixing any bugs in Torque(if possible).

Okay. I managed to get the comm log to email. Don't know what the problem was yesterday.
I wasn't ablebto add any description to the body of the message, but the subject line reads:
"Torque comms debug for 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (Transmission Temp)"
This particular comm log is fully what Torque generated yesterday when running the transmission temp gauge. This was the only PID displayed on the screen while running Torque.

I have the new update and saw the trans temp function. It fires up, but registers my trans temp at a constant -32F.

Ian was able to confirm for me that my 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited likely requires a Chrysler/Jeep specific extended PID in order to access the transmission temperature parameter.
After trying all the extended PIDs that are included with Torque I am still unable to access transmission temperature.
If anyone has access to the extended PID for transmission temperature, and the associated equation for calculating the output value for display, please chime in.

I fail to understand how these codes can be protected. Even if the manufacturer licenses their use to scanner manufacturers, once it's on the wiring harness it's in the public domain - no?
Be that as it may. Extended PIDs for some automobile manufacturers (e.g. Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler) are not freely available. Ford seems to make most of their extended PIDs available which is why they come baked-in with Torque.
I don't believe extended PIDs (effectively small lines of proprietary code) that are used by manufacturers in PCMs/ECUs count as public domain. If this were true then would it be okay to take unlicensed lines of code e.g. Java) and bake it into an operating system you were developing? Just ask Google how that works. They were effectively exonerated in the end but the accusations against them clearly showed that small snippets of proprietary code aren't in the public domain just because they are in products that are available to the public.
Extended PIDs are not part of the basic OBDII standard and are not governed by the same rules. Manufacturers develop the make/model specific PIDs for their use and license them to others for use for a fee.
I don't particularly like this system and how it works, but this seems to be the way of things today.
If you have access to a means of obtaining extended PIDs for Chrysler products (including a 2010 Jeep Wrangler) please post them or indicate where they can be had. You will forever have the admiration of Wrangler JK owners, as measuring transmission temperature using Torque would save owners a huge amount of $ since these vehicles are notorious for running hot transmissions.
Copying source code is very different from reverse engineering a physical protocol. Patent protection is relevant in protecting proprietary protocols (which then become published), but reverse engineering of software to achieve interoperability is generally legal. The software license may prohibit this, but that is then starting to become less clearly enforcible. Best not to believe just the people trying to sell you a product that might be also available for free.

Does any know how/where to get the extended PIDs that will make this valuable feature of Torque working; legalities aside?
I would "reverse engineer" what I'm looking for but this is not my area of expertise. My reliance on those far more intelligent and capable than myself comes into play at this point.
I don't know to get the extended PIDs but I purchased a gauge from Aeroforce (www.aeroforcetech.com) that is able to read the transmission temperature and other extended PIDs. I don't know if they would give you the codes or not.
If someone has a way to read the extended PIDs by inserting a device between this gauge and the obd connector and analyzing what it is doing, I'd be willing to try it because I just ordered the Kiwi bluetooth device and would like to use my phone for some of the things instead of the gauge.
