Hello,
I'm looking for a key that works with Torque. I have seen a lot of vidéos on Youtube, and I don't find a key that works fast with torque.
I have a ODBII compliant car (2006), but with no engine RPM speedometer.
That's why I would like to have a key that works fast in order to see my engine RPM In real time...
Explainations : On Iphone devices we can see that the RPM display match in real time to the car's dashborad RPM display :

and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF4f3m-HijY&feature=player_embedded
But on Torque :

and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKzsHxVD9OA
We can see that it has 1 second (or more?) of latency
I have a HTC Desire with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor which is powerfuller that an Iphone 3G.
So my question : is there a solution to see Torque working with NO latency (or a very low latency)?
Regards,
Fred
P.S. : I'm French, sorry for my bad English...
The simple answer is Yes 🙂
In the Rev video, you only see one display on the screen. This means only 1 value is read from the OBD port. This makes updates fast really fast. It also matters what vehicle type you have - if you have a Toyota then PIDs can be retrieved from the ECU faster than for example from a Mercedes ECU.
Just like in the Rev video - if you only have *1* display on the screen in Torque, then updates will be lightening quick with no latency!
The more displays you add, the more PIDs have to be retrieved from the ECU, and each PID (on a typical ECU) takes on average 150ms to retrieve. The ECU that Rev was demo'ed on retrieved values at a far faster rate (as would Torque, on that same ECU).
You can't really do a decent comparison from videos taken by different people on different vehicles - it's not really a fair benchmark at all as they are showing different things, using different manufacturers ECUs 🙂
You can see that torque has no little or no latency in the video below about 16 seconds in:

PS: your English is better than my French 😉
Yes I have a Toyota ECU (the car is a Citroën C1 (the same that Toyota Aygo)) the ECU is a BOSH and it's writtent TOYOTA on it too!
So I can buy the cheap key on Ebay and have good results?
In the movie we cas see this adapter :
http://cgi.ebay.fr/WIRELESS-BLUETOOTH-OBD-2-ODB-II-INTERFACE-SCANTOOL-B05-/300479079264?pt=FR_JG_Auto_Pi%C3%A8ces_Outillage&hash=item45f5f2e360#shId
For 13€ I will buy it!
If you need help to translate Torque to French, i would be glad to help you.. (I'm in a French IT school)
Regards,
Fred
Ah, the cheap ebay adapters...
That particular ebay adapter might give you problems, or it may work perfectly - there have been a few instances whereby the adapters are faulty (they receive data from their bluetooth unit incorrectly). Make sure that if you get a broken one, that you are able to return it!
If that one turns out to be a good unit then it should work just fine with Torque!
Thanks for the offer of translations - I'm not ready to translate just yet, but when I am I'll post on here to let you know!
Thanks
Ian
I've ordered one of them. If it doesn't work I will buy an other more expensive adapter...
Thanks a lot for your good and fast answers!
Fred
Just to let you know, I have ordered one of the Cheap adapters (same one as you).
Unfortunately its not perfect.
It will sometimes not read all PID's and it will not work at full speed.
In addition some PID's (like KM/L, etc) only work here and there, depending on what the adapter feels.
The cheap adapter is good, but it wont be perfect.
I say: try it out, and upgrade your adapter if you like the app enough: I know i will 😉
Hello,
I have received my cheap Ebay adapter. It works great and with the "fast communication" setting, i'have the RPM quite in real time and it's all what I need. (my car doesn't have an engine RPM speedometer)
I have a Toyota Aygo, and I believe that there is no "on-board computer" option (which displays KM/L on the dashboard).
So I think that the ECU don't have these data.
Do you think so too?
Anyway Torque is a really great app and I will purchase it in a few days.
I'll think to buy a better adapter, but I don't have 100€ for buying one of them. (I'm student)
Thanks for your help!
P.S. : I will post my feedback/tests in a few days/weeks
P.S.2 : Sorry if my english is'nt perfect...
Fred
The Paid version of torque has a french description. (in android market) I see that it's an automated traducted text.
If you need i'will be proud to give you a good traduction if you give me the original english text.
Regards,
Fred
That would be cool - Googles translate does a fairly awful automatic translation of the description 🙂
The only limit is that the text can only be 325 characters in length (including punctiation, all spaces, and linefeeds!)
Thanks
