Torque not reading Fault Codes

Hi,

Does anybody have any idea why Torque would not be reading the fault codes on my mercedes vito 110cdi 2000?

It will connect to the ELM327 adaptor fine, using the ISO 9141-2 protocol at 5 baud.

It will read throttle position and other available data but not report back on any fault codes.

Thanks

Spencer

P.S. EDC (ecu) light is on, so there are fault codes stored!

Hi

The EDC (from memory) is not covered by the OBD2 DTC standard - it is seperate unit to the vehicle ECU in the fact that it can light up without a corresponding OBD2 fault code

It's possible that you have a fuelling problem, something like a dead glow plug or fuel starvation (ie the fuel filter needs cleaning)

Wow, Speedy response, Thanks!

The EDC light does come on for other faults with the Vito (I thought) as there is no traditional MIL light on the dashboard. The van is also in limp mode and that would seem to indicate a fault code being stored somewhere as well.

All that aside, if I understand correctly, I won't be able to read fault codes from the ECU as it is not fully OBD2 compliant?

I may try and trigger a fualt code tonight and see if that is readable

Hi

You should be able to read any fault code that is stored on the ECU,....when the ECU follows the OBD2 standard.

The requirement for OBD2 was 1996 for petrol (in the US), and 2004 for diesel (though some manufacturers implemented it before 2004)

It's possible that the adapter could be an issue if you have one of the clone ones and it's faulty(there is a 'error rate' counter in the pro app that can be used to check the adapters not faulty).

Which version of the app are you using?

Ah,

the free one at the moment as I wanted to check it worked Ok before purchasing full version.

I would imagine though, if the adaptor is reading all the other data, it should be able to see fault codes?

I'm going to try triggering a fault code tonight and see if the app can read it.

It'll be reading the other data intermittently if it's faulty. so that makes fault code reading a bit of fun! so make sure you try to read it multiple times just in case the adapter is playing up. If it reads sometimes and not others, then that's a good sign of adapter issues 🙂

Hi ,

I have the same problem. The software/adapter does not read fault code. Evertying else is working fine the blue tooth is conecting fine and all the other sensors it's working.

I have a Opel Asta H 1.9 CDTI 150 hp from 2007 and i know for a fact that i have at least one fault code P0234 .

I also try the interface/torq on another Opel Astra and a Ford Mondeo and same rezult.

this is the interface ELM327

Thank you
Cristian.

Hi!

Torque can read OBD2 fault codes if they are present on the PCM, which should be the case in your instances.

What version of the app are you using?

The interface you have quoted has a high 'faulty' rate. You will need (if you have the full app) to let it connect to the ECU for a few minutes, then go into the 'Adapter Status' screen and check the 'Error Rate'. If this is above 0, then you have a faulty adapter and it should be replaced.

Faulty adapters can affect the ability to retrieve fault codes. This is usually the case when you know a fault is present but not being retrieved. The app has been tested on all protocols and is able to retrieve OBD2 fault codes from any OBD2 compliant vehicle, so in this case I would take a very close look at that adapter as it's one of the ones I warn about on http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters

Hi ,

I'm using the latest pay version of your application. I've have use the adapter for 2 hours and the adapter has 0 Errors.

If i Check the option "Disable ELM327 auto timing" the software don't read the RPM and other indicators. Otherwise it read everthing. It's there an option that i should check to read fault codes ?

It is possible that onboard test (gas pedal + break pedal + turn key) to give me the code from elsewere and not ECU ?

Thank you.
Cristian.

Hi

Are you absolutely certain that these are OBD2 fault codes you are trying to retrieve? ABS and SRS systems are not covered by the OBD2 protocol specification (unless you are using a *very* recently manufactured vehicle and the manufacturer has homogenised the fault reporting systems)

If you have the Disable ELM327 auto timing adjust and the adapter is not working, then that would indicate that the adapter again may be the issue as that option turns on settings that should work with bad adapters. If the app stops being able to retrieve information for some sensors, then that would indicate that the adapter is not able to retrieve the info.

pull the plug off of the Intake Air Temp sensor and start it up. That should force a fault code, and you can try to read it.

I am having the same problem with an ELM 327 bluetooth adapter plugged into a 2001 Infiniti I30 in the U.S. Torque connects to the bluetooth adapter and properly receives and displays real-time data from the ECU. But when I check the fault codes, Torque says there are no codes. However, my MIL lamp is illuminated, and when I scan the ECU with a wired generic scan tool the wired GST indicates a P0430 error code (catalyst efficiency below threshold). Any ideas? I am using the paid version of Torque. Thank you.

Hi

Are you using one of the cheap chinese clone adapters (commonly found on ebay)?

A common fault with these adapters is a high error rate on the communications which have knock-on effects to 0-60 / HP timings/measurements, can cause pausing/slow dials, and can also interfere with reading fault codes.

I am using the free torque now to test on my dodge 2002 Dakota. I currently have two codes on the truck. These were picked up my two windows based programs. Torque comes up with c1500, not the p0455 and p0456 codes it should. Since the other two programs got the right codes with this OBD2 pickup the problem must be with torque?

Hi!

No, it's likely a problem with the adapter, and the free version doesn't have the aptitude to tell you if the adapter is bad or not..

The fault code reading uses the standard OBD2 fault code pulling - if your getting one fault code, you should be getting them all. If you are not, then it will likely be due to bad communications with the adapter.

Disable fast mode, and enable 'disable elm327 auto timing', to make your adapter work the slowest mode possible if you are using the free version. Then try several times to retrieve the faults.

Alternatively try the full version - it can work around bad adapters in most cases and the fault code routines can also pull faults from ABS and SRS systems on some newer vehicles (and older ones where the manufacturer has implemented

Also, is your windows software OBD2 only, or does it query the ECU using proprietary commands (unique to each manufacturer, that aren't published as part of the OBD2 standard?)

Also, last check - you are using the most recent version from the Android Market - Torque is only distributed on the Android Market.

Right,

Finally gotten round to purchasing the full version.

Adaptor tab is telling me zero faults, I have tried the settings as suggested above and still will not pull fault codes.

The software will, however, temporarily reset the fault light on the dashboard.

Is this because the diagnostics in the Mercedes of this era are not OBD compliant and use a manufacturer specific protocol?

In the adpator setting, it does say "does not comply to any obd standard"

Any chance of getting this to work?

Also, any way this software could read the codes from my Eberspacher Hydronic heater? The EDiTH software for this is free to download, so maybe possible?
