Using an ELM 327 and Android phone, I’ve been unsuccessful communicating with my sons 2001 Bonneville? I've hooked up to 4 others and had no problem. Ideas appreciated.

Some of the cheaper adapters may
work with some protocols but not
others. e.g. Ford PWM.
Were the successful vehicles using the
same protocol that failed to connect?
(VPW?).

And what years were the others? All vehicles made in the US in and after 2008 use the CAN bus protocol regardless of make. Some makes/models used the CAN bus a few years before that.
