... Without going through Android Market?
I have a google checkout account, but for some reason it won't let me add that google account to my Android phone, so I can't purchase apps through the phone.

Hi!
Unfortunately not, you'll need to create an android market account to be able to purchase apps - it's a little annoying, but not a limitation I can fix.
