Is Torque Pro's "Historic Fault" the same thing as the Smog shop's "Permanent Fault detected"? If not, is Torque Pro able to report a 'Permanent Fault'? If the Historic Fault is NOT a current (or Permanent) fault, is my system fault free? But just being extremely picky about drive cycle parameters or times the cycle is repeated???
Surprisingly, my 2015 Mustang V6 w/ 24,500 miles "failed a smog test: Permanent Fault P0456 (.020" very small leak)" about 1 1/2 weeks ago. After many hours checking for leaks, smoke testing, replacing Purge & Vent valves, and several 'drive cycle' attempts over that period.
What I have tried:
Last night I cleared codes with Torque Pro and went for the Drive cycle described below. Now I only see on Torque Pro "Historic Fault P0456". But again, EVAP monitor never completes when I check the following morning, allowing soak time.
After I believe I have corrected the P0442 .040" 'Small leak' and P0456 .0020" 'Very small leak' issues by: thoroughly cleaning the capless fuel filler, then applying silicone grease to both inner and outer fuel filler 'flaps' of the 'capless fuel filler', replacing both 'Purge' and 'Vent' valves (even though both 'seemed to test as working'), then smoke testing. I have had no luck getting the elusive EVAP monitor test to show 'Complete'.
After a long Drive Cycle outing last night, following Ford's specific requirements, and even doing the 21 minute (8 at 45-60, 5 at constant speed, 8 at 45-60) EVAP portion a second time after all other drive parameters were done, the ‘Pending P0442' was gone, but Historic P0456 remains. Screen images attached (hope it works).
Not clearing codes (or last nights completed monitors), and going on another circuit for another Drive Cycle. A link for UnderhoodService/Ford https://www.underhoodservice.com/ford-permanent-diagnostic-trouble-codes-dtcs/
says: Three consecutive fault-free monitoring cycles are needed to clear the 'Permanent DTC'. -or- "One confirmed fault-free monitoring cycle following a scan tool 'clear DTC' request". (I thought I had done this before last nights longer drive cycle run!) Is Torque Pro not fitting their definition of a 'Scan Tool'?
Off for another drive cycle trying to get EVAP to 'complete'.
For some reason, my message did not show up. Just the subject.
I learned that 'Historic' is a Ford term not Torque. Also that it it is not an active DTC, but just a record of a fault no longer active. There is no way to delete/ clear via scan tool, but "an Historic Fault will 'age out' after 80 or more engine on cycles." :o)
But I got good news when I took my Mustang for yet another drive cycle trying to "Complete" my elusive EVAP monitor. After a few minutes into my cycle, while stopped, I noticed that the green EVAP Complete appeared in the Readiness DTC list. Woo Hoo! All instructions I had read said THE EVAP monitor would complete after a one hour soak period, where the Evap monitor tests that the system can hold the pressure over that time (drop within a given parameter).
Only last night did I read that for Ford, the Evap monitor "will complete at the beginning of the fourth drive cycle".
I'm a happy camper after a week + of frustration troubleshooting the EVAP system an many drive cycles in between. Off to get it smogged later this morning. :o)
Glad I found this forum. I'll be back later to learn how to add gauges for specific items.
