Hardwiring phone to obdii

I bought a obdii plug that goes to a USB and purchased a USB to USB adapter so I can plug the cable that came with the phone into the adapter. So basically it goes from obdii to the USB adapter and from the adapter directly to the phone. But it doesn't not work. Anyone knows if I can make this work or it only works with wifi or Bluetooth?

It only works with Bluetooth.
I also think what you're trying to do is hardware dependent. If your phone only charges and plays music, transfers files (only if the driver is installed on your computer) then I don't think it would work at all.

Some phones allow sharing of network systems, those would most likely work.

The problem is, Bluetooth is a protocol that is standard across all devices, whether it's an iPhone, Android, Laptop, PS3, 360, earpiece, or OBDII Wireless Bluetooth adapter, Bluetooth is always the same.

When you try to hardwire something, both devices need need to know how to communicate with each other, it won't be the same for someone using an HTC phone and someone else using an LG, or Samsung etc, because the hardware is not the same.

USB support is in the next version 🙂

There are some requirements for it however - currently only Honeycomb devices (or above) support the required bits for USB host mode to work, currently this is just tablets and the new galaxy nexus running android 4.0

When other devices get Android 4.0 they may support it too as the chips used on most devices are capable of USB host mode, but I can't say for definite on this until manufacturers start sending out updates and I can test properly

USB support is nice and fast on a Motorola Xoom and the OBDLink i'm testing with at the moment!

Thanks for the info guys. It's kinda disappointing I really thought I found a way to save a few bucks.

You'll also need a micro USB 'Host' cable (as those cables have an extra pin that is connected differently to enable host mode) - it's unlikely the cable you currently have will work if it's the normal 'phone to computer' cable.

Ian,

Are you using a rooted xoom or unrooted for USB host?

Nope! It's running original firmware which makes it all the more better! 🙂

You need the cable that enabled USB host mode on the tablet, that's the most important bit -search ebay for 'micro USB OTG' and you should get to the right kind of usb adapter

In the next version you will be able to choose 'wired' from the connection type menu (where Bluetooth and WiFi are).

Is there an update to this, to using an OTG USB cable with an old OBD adapter and a new phone (running KitKat, LG H345)?

That is, is Torque working with "hardwired" USB cables in 'host mode' pretty seemlessly now?

Thanks to anyone who knows or can help.
