Just wondered if you could help. I have a 2000 Alfa 156 1.8 in the UK and can't get it to work.
I am using an elm327 device tested on another car.
Aparently earlier use the kwp2000 protocol. Not sure if it helps but copyed the following from another forum
First you need to configure the ELM to work with the Fast Init. ate 0 atl 0 atsp 5
Now, the most important, is to setup the header properly, each car could have its own addres they all use the same addresses. atsh 8010f1 (Look for KWP documentations to understand what does theese 3 bytes mean)
Finally, start the comunications: 81 (this is the start communication Service ID for KWP2000)
Now you can issue the services Id to do whatever you want.
This procedure is working properly in an Alfa Romeo 156 with a Bosch M1.5.5
I hope once initialized correctly as details above your software will work with earlier obd2 Alfa Romeo and fiat cars. Either that or can I change settings to make torque work?
Thanks
John
Will pop out in a short while and send a debug log as well but thought info above would help a lot as its where fiat Alfa differ from standard kwp2000 and is a known working solution for these cars. Apart from the init parts it should work the same as standard kwp2000 protocol.

Log sent
Just wondered how quickly we usually get a reply after sending in comms log. Even if just to say it arrived?
Not worried as I know the Dev is really busy so not worried just curious really.
Thanks
John
Have you tried any other scantools on the alfa? As you prob know, petrol cars do not have to be obd2 or eobd compliant until 2001, weather they brought it in on earlier years can vary between models, even vary between the same model if it was manufactured in a different factory.
Kwp2000 is an obd2 protocol.
It works fine on other PC software and a handheld cheap obd2 reader.
And as you will see above I posted the Alfa specific comands to get obd2 working on the 156.
do appreciate your reply though as it was a valid possability.
Thanks
John
Well new version is out.
I will keep my fingers crossed the bit in the changelog where he says more manufacturers added to vin code means there is a chance pre 2002 Alfa 156s might work now 🙂
Hi, was wondering if you got my comms log and if the info I gave in post 1 is usefull?
Thanks
John
Never got a reply, just wanted to see if you got my comma log and if you had a chance to look at this?
Hi,
I have an Alfa Romeo 156 JTS model year 2003.
Torque works fine for me on general information:
- Accel
- Revs
- Throttle
- Speed
- etc.
But I haven't any information regarding PID, facult codes in ECU, etc.

Hi but jtd has a different Ecuador 🙂
Ta
I have a Fiat Punto JTD year 2002 not working?
Torque don't read a code but my car is a obd2 🙂 why?
Maybe a similar reason to me.
Fiat Alfa on some ecu's require a slightly different way of initializing obd2 comms.
Do what I did and Google your car model and elm327 and with any luck you will at least hit a forum with the way elm327 needs initialized to work on your car.
May help the developer make it work for you.
Also as per instructions on here hit the send comms log button after failing so developer can look at the log.

Ok thanks, log this and...I hope to make it work.. but i have find a fiatecuscan and work... in full XD

My mother has a 2001 156 and I had the same issues in the past, now the big secret: you can see the OBD connector and manage to plug the adapter, but here in Italy they were just commencing to spread the obd protocols etc, so in the year 2001 you may find a car with the obd capabilities and depending on the MONTH of make you can find the same identical car without the capability.
2000 make FiatGroup cars (including AlfaRomeo and Maserati) neither had the obd wires (but had the obd connector!!), let's say it depends on the chip they used. You can clearly see a number on the chipbox, but I'm not a professional mechanic so I cannot tell you the difference between the numbers. Only thing I know is that my mother's 156 chip has been made 3 months before they started to produce full obd2 compliant systems.
Pity me. Probably pity you as well...
Edit: other "circa" 2001 FiatGroup cars I've been testing had obd capability (like Punto 2nd series) but you could just read RPM and a couple of other boring data. from 2002 on, they should have mounted new chips on all the lines. Now I have a Mito and there are no problems with compatibility and there are more pid than in an Eurofighter 😀
Hello, I it is possible to add suport for this ECU type? For older Alfa Romeo cars (i have 156 - 1998). It has M1.5.5 ECU which should work wit obd interface ... I think Scanmaster and Alfadiag software can read data from this ECU.
So is there any chance to have it work?
Thanx
