I'm considering getting an adapter and Torque, but I'm a little confused about the protocols mentioned and the corresponding hardware.
Is it true that I need an ELM327 adapter, or will any confirmed OBD2 adapter work with Torque? I'm considering getting the OBDLink LX, but if I can get something a little cheaper that also works, I would consider it.

It has to be ELM327 type, but some adapters do not advertise the type. I would stay away from most of the cheaper Chinese-made adapters for a while. I have lately seen many that did NOT support all protocols even though they claimed they did. Most of the ones with the missing protocols only support the CAN bus protocol and many cars made before 2008 do not use that one. One of those cheaper companies, BAFX, claims specifically to NOT do what the others are doing to save costs. Those might be worth a shot. Otherwise buy from a US company and be safe.
