Post 2015 Subaru Outback Transmission Oil Temperature
on: February 11, 2015 (GMT)

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and I would kindly ask for some help with reading the temperature of the transmission oil of 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R CVT.
I did search the forum but could not find a specific PID for Subaru to help my question.
Another Subaru owner has the same set up like me and also was unable to find this info.
We both used the supplied predefined transmission temperature setting in the app, but we doubt that this is the correct one for our cars as it consistently shows the same temperature as the one in the coolant. No doubt at some points these 2 temperatures will be identical, but it is not possible and it is known and well documented that they differ significantly under varying driving/idling conditions.

Here is a post I found for reading the transmission temperature on Scangauge: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/65-parts-accessories-performance/30563-scangauge-fan-6.html

Here is a post where you can see the temperature of the coolant and the trans oil are the same:
http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/138-gen-5-2015-present/219890-odbii-logging-android-phone-devices.html

Having the ability to read the transmission temperature to me personally and to many others from the SubaruOutback.org forum and the Legacy forum alike (same engines and transmission, just different body) is very, very important.

Please, please help!

Cheers to you all :)

I’m not sure Torque is setup for SSM over
CAN… (wasn’t presented as a choice in the
protocol dropdown list).

there is a setting for SSM over Can in the menu now, but if your adapter cannot read the SSM protocol, you won’t get any information. :( I am in a similar situation with my SAAB 9-2X Aero, which is really a rebadged Subaru WRX.

The SSM (Beta) was for older vehicles pre-CAN which
required a special adapter. The SSM over CAN… not sure.

Basing my thoughts on this…

Hi

No – for OBD2 compliant vehicles (and Subaru which supports OBD2) then you can use any OBD2 compatible bluetooth adapter that supports the ELM327 command set (there is a list on http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters )

For vehicles that don’t support OBD2 (this is usually pre-1996 petrol vehicles sold in the EU / US) then you will need to see if it’s SSM-II compatible – if it is, then you can use the OBDKey with the app (and select the SSM protocol in the vehicle profile)

Newer vehicles should also be SSM-II compatible. The app will work on these as well using the SSM protocol (you can have vehicles that are both OBD2 and SSM-II compatible).

The newest Subarus which use CANBUS, are not yet supported though – typically these are vehicles from 2006/7 onwards (all manufacturers started switching to CANBUS around this time). But these vehicles will be OBD2 compliant if sold in the EU / US due to legislation.

End Quote.

I’m thinking it is using SSM commands embedded in CANBUS
messages. If Torque can’t properly send the command and
parse its response then adding a custom pid is out of the
question.

Ian,

Can you look at adding support with
the request/response for this too?
(while you’re adding the extra bytes
for the BMWs).
