Post USB adapter just will not connect
on: February 8, 2013 (GMT)

This message is a continuation of my original problem. To this, I would like to add that the USB adapter does function on a WinXP setup. Thank you for the first reply. Now, the tablet at hand (Irulu 7? A008 WiFi only, of a 2012 origination date) is, nearly, of the latest model: Why would the Android USB API not be enabled (or am I mistaken here), if this is such a mainstream feature? The tablet does come with an OTG cable and will see a storage device, mouse, keyboard, etc. My worry is that, on the contrary, there are relatively few tablets that “fully” support the Android API for whatever reason (based on the USB host app output). May you give me examples of your statement that tablets support the proper USB API in the mainstream? I purchased the whole setup (tablet + ELM327 + Torque app) just for the purpose of using your app. If I understand your first reply, then will you ever add enhancement(if yes, then what is the timeframe..) to your software to see “rooted or third party” USB host API? There is an app (i.e., USB device info, etc.) that will see a connection on my device of the ELM327 adapter, but, of course, this app(s) does not do anything with the connection. I would simply like to know where the problem is and what your recommendation is to attempt to fix it.

Anyone have similar connectivity problems with a wired usb ELM327 adapter and WiFi tablet having claimed USB host mode support. As I stated before, using a USB diagnostic app which queries the USB hub (internal..) for connected devices does see the adapter. It would be great to know where the fault lies!

AFAIK, there are only a few USB-serial chips that Torque supports right now. Which adapter do you have and which chipset is it using?

I think Prolific and FTDI are supported.

The adapter is an FTDI ELM327 UART that is confirmed to work on a WinXP machine with the vehicle. The problem is that Torque/Android are not properly supporting the USB (driver). I was hoping someone has a suggestion to get the USB properly supported or at least relate a similar problem. Otherwise I have to say/conclude that USB adapter support is non existant and the advertising and features around the USB are false and misleading in the Torque app.

Torque has nothing to do with the “usb drivers”. That is up to your device. If your device cannot see the adapter, then that is your first problem. The ROM on the device needs to have support for the FTDI chip.

Once that support is there, torque will use it correctly.

The support is built into Torque, but your device needs to have proper USB Serial device support. Just because you have OTG for keyboard/mouse/Memory doesn’t mean a USB serial chip will work.

I have the same Problem as i posted in an other topic. Android is recognizing the usb adapter and is asking which app should be used to deal with the usb device. but in torque no usb device is shown.

I just got the ELM 327 USB Interface and discovered the same USB non-connection problem with my Android tablet which does not have Bluetooth. There’s another thread that explains that the interface uses a CP 2102 chip rather than the FTDI chip and Ian doesn’t have the info to make a Torque compatible driver for the CP 2102.

My Elm works well with the Scantool.net app that came with the ELM, on a Win7 laptop, but the Torque app on a tablet is what I really wanted to run. There are custom PIDs for a Prius for the Torque app.

I guess my option is to get an Android tablet with Bluetooth and the ELM 327 bluetooth version or wait and see if Ian comes up with the CP2102 version.

On the other hand there’s a bunch of files with “FDTI” in their names on the little CD that came with the ELM. They may be all for windows but I’m going to look at them more closely.

Does your Tablet even support USB Host?

I have another clone usb adapter on order (murphys law dictates I currently have 2 ftdi ones) hopefully this one will be a cp2102 and i can start playing

You will need a USB host capable tablet – basically most things android 3.1 should be USB capable if the manufacturer has added support.

Make sure that you don’t start Torque before plugging the cable in too – if the tablet supports USB host, and the cable is supported, then Torque will automatically try to start when you plug the USB cable in to the android device

My tablet also has Host USB port. Tablet appears to recognize that something has been plugged into the port but cannot identify what it is and it sits waiting for some manual connect action. I have tried unplugging and re-plug. Tablet does acknowledge unplug & replug but still asks for ID.

Without the ELM327 USB cable plugged in, Torque would not fully load. With the USB plugged in, Torque displays the dial gauges but then sits asking for id of whats plugged in.

Mine arrived yesterday, unfortunately it turned out to be a prolific based adapter, not CP2102 so the quest to find one continues

Hi Guys,

I’m glad I found this convo.

So I’m pretty much having the same exact issue. My obd scanner reports fine with every usb otg diagnostic app that i use, except torque. the chip within my scanner is cp2102 as well.

Is this a torque issue? does it not work with this chip?

and if not, do you know if it will work with any of the following :

I bought a cheap tablet with 4.0.3 on it. it recognized usb drives etc but at the start would not work with scantool.

I fixed this by rooting the tablet and using the app “USB Host Diagnostics”. This app has a diagnostics function that will try and fix the API, just needs super user access. Anyway it was able to fix the API on my tablet and I was able to get the two to talk, and it now works great.

This will help fix the tablet end, if your using usb though you want the scantool sx as it can be left plugged in since it “sleeps”, its also fast and has a solid track record of working.
